The sun shone bright over the dull city on an early September morning, and this morning marked the first day of a new school year for many teenagers.
"Bye Mito! I'll see you when I get home." Gon stated on his way out the door.
"Bye Gon, have a good first day!" His aunt cheered as she watched Gon set off for his first day as a freshman in high school.
The school was about a ten minute walk from his house. Gon took a deep breath, and set off through the brisk weather towards his destination. He felt anxious yet simultaneously excited for what was to come. After all, not only was it his first day in a new level of school, but it was his first day attending any school in the city.
Gon reached the front gates of the school, and checked the time on his phone. Phew, 7:50 A.M. About ten minutes until start time.
He stepped into the school and headed towards the office to obtain his schedule. Fortunately, the main office was right by the front door, so it wasn't hard to find at all. As soon as Gon made his debut, however, he immediately noticed quick glances from surrounding students.
At the front of the office was a blonde woman wearing a pink pantsuit. Noticing Gon's presence, she looked up from her monitor and greeted him with a smile.
"Hey, I'm new here and was wondering if I could get my schedule?" Gon awkwardly let out, followed by a nervous laughter.
"No problem, what's your name?" the woman asked.
"Oh! Gon Freecss."
"Here we are," the woman assured as she pulled up a page onto her computer, "I've got your schedule right here."
She handed Gon his schedule moments after, "You are in homeroom 231 on the second floor. My name is Pakunoda, by the way. I'm the secretary here."
"Thanks a lot, Ms. Pakunoda!" Gon grinned.
"You have a good day now." she dismissed the boy with a subtle wave.
Before long, it was 8 A.M., and Gon resided in his designated homeroom seat. He looked around at everybody near him. While most people blended in, he did take note of a few unique appearances.
He looked down at his schedule to check his first class. Science, huh? Not too far from here.
The last thing Gon wanted right now was to be late to his first class. He was very focused on first impressions and really did not want to embarrass himself.
Stepping into the room, he noticed just about everybody was already there. Only a few seats were empty, and the teacher wasn't here at the moment. The room was set up housing large tables with black countertops. Each table had four chairs pulled up, one for each student. Given it was the first day, seats were labeled, and Gon found his seat near the back corner.
Without hesitation, he sat down at his table. Then, one of his classmates realized he seemed very unfamiliar, and spoke up.
"Hey," the girl spoke, resting her chin in the palm of her hand, "are you new here?"
"Yep. My name is Gon, it's nice to meet you!" Gon greeted enthusiastically.
The girl chuckled and ran her finger through her brunette hair. "I thought I didn't recognize you, my name is Palm."
The blonde girl next to Gon inserted herself into the conversation. "She is sooo weird, right? She like knows everybody so of course she would be the first to notice you." she joked.
"Hey, Retz, cut it out!" Palm defended.
"Relax, I was only kidding," Retz teased, "Hi Gon, my name is Retz."
"Nice to meet you, Retz!" Gon greeted. He took notice of her sophisticated appearance.
"Well, I guess that leaves me." the remaining boy spoke. He was wearing a blue hoodie and had a blonde, androgynous haircut. "My name is Kurapika. It's nice to meet you, Gon." Kurapika chuckled.
"Hi Kurapika!" Gon exclaimed.
After the group finished introducing themselves, the teacher walked in and the class began. Since it was the first day, the class mainly consisted of setting up and preparing for the future. The group of four chatted during the class, and Kurapika helped Gon with any questions he had.
"Hey Gon, what class do you have next?" Kurapika inquired.
Gon glanced down at his schedule and then met Kurapika's eyes. "I've got journalism next." he insisted.
"Hey, me too." Kurapika grinned, "Follow me, I'll lead the way."
During the next two periods, Gon hangs out with Kurapika. For the time being, they both share every class together except for one. When lunch rolls around, Kurapika invites Gon to sit with him, which he happily obliged.
Kurapika led Gon to his usual lunch table. Somebody was already there.
"Hey Leorio, I invited my friend Gon to sit with us today. Is that okay?" Kurapika asked with confidence.
"Of course it is." Leorio assured. The pair sat down across from Leorio. "What's up?"
"Not much really, but this is actually my first day here!" Gon stated.
For a second, Leorio tilted his head slightly in confusion. Then Kurapika quickly spoke up, "It's his first time attending school in this town. He moved here over the summer."
Gon scratched the back of his neck. "Oh, sorry, guess I should've been more specific." he laughed.
"It's fine, I think you'll like it here." Leorio reassured, flashing a thumbs-up.
Gon looked around the cafeteria. "Is anybody else joining us?"
"No actually," Kurapika replied, "Leorio is really the only person I sit with. Usually, Palm and her friends Baise, Kaymee, and Machi sit at the other end but they aren't here right now. We don't usually intermingle anyways."
The end of lunch came quickly, and students began their way to their next classes. Since Kurapika wasn't in the next class with him, Gon went on ahead independently.
Leorio turned to Kurapika, "He seems really optimistic."
Kurapika swiftly interjected, "I know, right? It's kind of strange, I would probably be terrified on my first day with a bunch of unfamiliar people."
Meanwhile, Gon was walking through the halls while looking at his schedule, not paying any attention to his surroundings. However, he was brought back to reality when he felt a collision.
Gon quickly jolted his head, "Oh my gosh! Sorry, I-"
"Hey, watch where you're going!" the boy snapped.
"I'm sorry, I was distracted. Are you alright?" Gon apologized.
The boy Gon bumped into, met his gaze, and Gon was caught off guard by the unexpected allure in his sapphire eyes.
"I'm.. fine," he murmured, "...are you new here?"
"Yeah, actually. It's my first day."
"Where are you headed, anyway?"
"I have algebra I." Gon responded.
"Hey, me too."
Suddenly, the two started walking in the same direction.
"My name is Gon, by the way."
"I'm Killua."
Under normal circumstances, Killua would've usually just dismissed an experience like this and move on with his day. However, he felt captivated by something. Gon's entire demeanor just seemed comforting to him. He's the first person to actually apologize to me in a long time...
Gon was intrigued by him. His energy seemed very introverted and mysterious, and Gon found himself wanting to befriend Killua after only meeting him seconds ago. No matter what, he wanted to know more.
