"Gon, dear," Mito started the conversation, concern clear in her voice, "you've been quiet all weekend, is everything okay?"

"Mhm." he grunted behind his bedroom door, preparing for the Monday ahead of him.

"Gon, I know when you're lying!"

  "I said I'm fine."

She watched as Gon exited his room in a hasty manner. He walked straight past her, through the kitchen, and mumbled a "Bye." before leaving fifteen minutes earlier than usual, ditching breakfast in the process.

For one of the first times in a long time, Mito felt genuinely hurt by her nephew. She knew something was wrong, but Gon refused to share the slightest bit of insight, ignoring her entirely.

Gon's early arrival had it's perks, including seeing Killua much sooner. Killua was usually one of the first few to arrive in an effort to avoid his own house as much as possible. Almost immediately, they spotted one another, and they ran towards each other, calling out the other's name in unison.

"I'm sorry!" Killua blurted once he was at an arm's length distance. Gon was almost taken aback for a moment, considering he knew how soft spoken Killua was.

  "Sorry for what?"

"I've been so neglectful towards you all of last week. I did the bare minimum, disregarded things you said, barely paid attention, and Illumi is here, and, and-"

  "Illumi? Illumi, your brother?"

"Y-yeah," Killua sighed, "he's going to be staying here for a while."

  "I'm sorry to hear that."

"Also, I checked my phone this morning. I don't hate you, I swear. Illumi blocked your number. I couldn't do anything about it all weekend." Killua explained with sincere regret, "I should've talked to you when I could have."

"Well that doesn't matter anymore! We're here together now, right?" Gon cheered.

"You're always so optimistic." Killua teased.

Heading into the building, Killua grabbed his stuff that he left a few days ago. Before he entered a state of panic, Gon knew he had to break the news to him. He tried to sugarcoat it best he could.

"Hey, um," Gon said softly, pulling out the diary from his own bag, "Retz was trying to take this."

Killua's eyes widened, and he instantly snatched it back into his possession before Gon's words could even process in his brain. "Oh! Thanks, I guess."

  "Did you read it?"

  "No!"

"Gon, please be honest with me." Killua looked at him sincerely.

  "I-I didn't read it. I swear!"

Killua sighed. "Do you know how I can tell you're lying? It's because when you do, you never look me in the eye."

In a matter of seconds, Gon looked like he was about to cry. "I-I'm sorry! I didn't mean to b-but I... please forgive me!"

"Gon, it's okay. I don't actually mind that much." At this moment, Killua hugged Gon tightly, dropping the book in the process. Seeing how upset Gon got just because he told a lie to him made him disregard the whole situation, and he didn't mind that much due to not explicitly stating his feelings.

Feeling a sudden brush against his leg, Gon's eyes shot open. His sudden alertness caused Killua to open his two. "Is something wrong?"

  "What a cool diary!"
