"Two vanilla cones, please!" Daichi asked sweetly, holding up two dollars to the window of the ice-cream truck. The worker nodded and ducked under the counter in the truck, soon emerging with two cones, each topped with a healthy scoop of vanilla ice cream. Daichi thanked him again and took the cones, balancing them gingerly in his hands.
"Woah! Hungry today, aren't we, Daichi?" One of the boys teased from his spot on the curb. He was eating a popsicle, trying not to let the sticky treat melt and run down his hand.
"Yep, sure am!" Daichi replied, smiling. He really didn't want the other boys interfering with him right now. He was on a mission, one he intended to complete.
Daichi slipped away from the group and started making his way down the street, making sure not to drop the ice cream. Soon the blue house he was becoming familiar with came into view. Taking a deep breath, Daichi stepped onto the property.
He quickly approached the front door, pressing the doorbell with his elbow. He waited for a moment before hearing footsteps on the other side of the door.
"Can I help you?" The same woman from the day before asked. She had opened the door enough so that she could talk to him, but not enough that he could see inside. She looked hesitant to open the door and ready to slam it shut at a moment's notice.
"Yes, ma'am. I was wondering if I could give this to someone who lives here. I've seen them around and wanted to say hi," Daichi said, putting on his most charming smile.
The woman glanced down at the ice cream in his hands then back up to his face.
"Thank you very much, but I'll have to give this to my son on your behalf," She said, holding out her hand to take the treat. Daichi handed one of the cones over reluctantly. He really wanted to finally meet this mystery boy in person, but his plans had been thwarted by social conventions.
The door was then shut with a definitive click, leaving Daichi standing alone on the doorstep. The wind blew lightly, ruffling Daichi's hair. It was a nice day, warm but not unbearably hot. It would have been a perfect day to make a new friend.
The brunette sighed and retreated from the doorstep, shuffling back down the street. He licked at his ice-cream, quickly finishing it off. The brunette wished he had someone to share it with.
But, Daichi had no time to sulk. He needed to be back by lunch, as his mother was expecting him. Daichi picked up the pace and made it back to his circle just as his mother was calling him for lunch.
"Where did you run off too?" Kazue asked as he walked through the door.
"I was visiting the house down the street."
"Oh, the one you asked me about?" She asked, surprised that her son had taken such an interest in it.
"That would be the one!" Daichi replied, smiling. He sat down at the table, looking over all the food that had been laid out.
Daichi and his mother ate quietly, occasionally making small talk. Daichi was still dissapointed that he hadn't been able to talk to the boy who lived in that house. He was sure that that method was going to work. Daichi finished eating and excused himself from the table, making his way back up to his room.
Daichi flopped onto his bed. He needed to think of another plan, but what else was there to do? He was already on the mother's radar, and she seemed to be wary of him. The boy in question definitely knew about him, if his mother delivered the ice cream like she said she would.
Daichi stared at the ceiling for another hour, contemplating his choices. Did he go the risky route and ask to meet him in person, or did he play it safe and send a letter? The possibilities were endless, but it was all about choosing the right one. Daichi felt like he was losing a game of Russian roulette.
Daichi groaned and turned over, now burying his face in his pillow. His thoughts were going a million miles and minute and it was giving him a massive headache.
Suddenly, the thoughts slowed. Well, more of came to a screeching halt. He had an idea, now the only problem was figuring out how to execute it.
