Suga stared out of his bedroom window, longing to feel the sun on his bare skin. It had been days since he had been outside, and he was starting to feel restless. Each rustle of the bright green leaves on the trees outside made the feeling of longing grow deeper in his chest. Each person he saw walking down the sidewalk felt like a knife to Suga's chest. They really took going outside for granted.
"Koushi! Time for lunch!" Suga's mother called from downstairs, beckoning her son to the kitchen.
Suga sighed and left the window, leaving his room and walking down the carpeted stairs that led to the kitchen. Koushi's mother stood by the counter, her long silver hair shining in the afternoon sun filtering through the window above the sink. The kitchen was neat and clean, for Suga had cleaned it just yesterday. Each white tile shone and each steel appliance glistened.
"I made sandwiches!" Suga's mother chirped, clasping her hands in front of her chest. Suga smiled and thanked her for the meal. He sat down at the counter beside her, making sure to push his bangs out of his eyes so they wouldn't get in the way.
As the two ate, Suga's gaze kept falling back to the window. The sun seemed to shine ever brighter now, creating multicolored spots on the boy's vision. He could see the same trees swaying from this window as he could from his bedroom. Seeing a different perspective of the outside world made him feel that much more lonely.
Suga swallowed a bite of his sandwich.
"Mom, could I go outside today?" Suga asked, looking up at his mother. He saw her tense before relaxing quickly. She fixed her expression from shocked to sympathetic in an instant.
"No. The news said the pollen count is high today," Suga's mother said after a moment of hesitation. Suga sighed and took one last bite of his sandwich.
"I'll be in my room if you need me," Suga sighed, standing up and placing his dishes in the sink. He walked back up to his room, closing the door firmly behind him.
Suga went to his window and sat on the seat, pulling one of his many stuffed animals into his lap.
While the window wasn't open and the curtain was closed, Suga could clearly see something moving around in the front yard. Though, since he was so high up, he couldn't see what it was.
Suga wrapped one hand around the edge of his curtain and pulled it back ever so slightly, just so he could see what it was.
To his surprise, it was a boy. He had never seen him before since he rarely had interactions with other kids his age. He didn't go outside much, so he wouldn't even have the chance to be invited to games with the neighborhood boys and girls.
Just as Suga was about to open his curtain another inch, the boy looked up. Even from his third floor window, Suga could see the deep tan of his skin and the chocolate color of his hair.
Quite frankly, Suga was scared. So, he did what any rational person would do.
He shut the curtain as hard as he could.
As soon as the curtain covered the entire window, Suga slumped against the wall. How he wished he could have gone outside today.
