it hurt because it mattered

October 5th

Julie waited in the waiting room impatiently, Nova, Carrie, Reggie and Alex eventually joining her.

Julie sat there, traumatized, and uncertain of what was the come. Her hands were coered in blood, along with her shirt. Her cheeks were tear stained and her eyes were red. It's crazy to think how close they've grown since July. It didn't matter if they were in a relationship or not, she felt deeply for him, she was almost certain she could say the same for him.

"Hello." A voice interrupted Julie's thoughts. She looked up to see what she assumed was another doctor.  "I'm Dr. Sabez, Luke's cardiologist. I just wanna say, I'm amazed at how far Luke has come. He's been through so much, and he manages to keep such a positive outlook on life. But as far as his state, it's not looking great.  He's stable as of right now, but a tiny bit out of it. In my 26 years of cardiology, I have never seen a case like this. We're doing everything we can Ms.Molina, but Lukas seems to only have...a good..43 percent chance of survival."

Julie's heart dropped, and she almost fell to her knees. Carrie had to step out, Alex and Reggie alongside her. Nova helped Julie sit down, and took over speaking to the doctor.

"What even happened?" Nova asked

"The blood was caused by an infection in his lungs. He seems to have an issue with his entire respiratory system. He also has large amounts of phlegm in his lungs, or better known as mucus. You usually don't produce large amounts of phlegm unless you have a cold, which Lukas does have. But along with the lung infection, and the heart issues, it can be fatal."

"Can she see him?" Nova asked.

"Yes, but if he seems loopy or out of it, that is completely normal." The doctor replied.

"No, I can't-" Julie whispered.

"Julie, you're gonna hate yourself if you don't go." Nova whispered to her.

"Nova, I can't do it."

"Julie, please. Do it for him." She begged.

Julie gave in, and followed Dr. Sabez to the room.

She walked in, and saw Luke on the hospital bed. Her heart dropped at the sight, and she started sobbing.

"I'll leave you two." Dr. Sabez said, shutting the door on her way out.

She went and sat on the chair right to his bed. "Hi." She sobbed.

His hand caressed her face, and he smiled lightly. "Don't cry."

She giggled a little tears still streaming down her face. She placed her hand on top of his, holding it lightly.

"I had a good run." He sad, also beginning to sob. He's always been the optimistic happy guy. He finally came to terms with it. He knows what's happening around him.

"Luke, no.."

"No, I did, I really did." He sobbed, Julie sobbed along, holding his hand tightly, never wanting to let go.

"Thank you, for making these last months worthwhile. I would've gave up a while ago, if it wasn't for you." He smiled.

Julie smiled back, tears now falling onto his hospital gown.

He grabbed her hand, and kissed it weakly for a few a few seconds. "I love you." He whispered.

flatline.

Luke's limp hand was still holding hers. She pulled it back, and began to sob.

"I love you too." She whispered.

Soon enough doctors were flooding in, performing CPR, and Julie was trying her hardest not to collapse.

"Someone get her out of here!"

"Get her out!"

"3, 2, 1"

"Lukas, can you hear us?"

"Ma'am you have to leave."

"Ready, 1, 2, 3!"

"Lukas! Lukas!"

"Doctor, it's useless."

"Hands off the patient."

"No!"

"There's no pulse."

Silence filled the room, and Julie listened from the outside.

"Time of death...3:12 PM."

Julie fell to her feet, and sobbed even harder. Nova rushed over comforting her. No amount of support, or comfort could bring him back, and that's all Julie wanted.
