A long time ago...
"Shall we get married, Hades?"
Perhaps she was bored. Or perhaps, she had eaten something that had addled with her brains. "Maleficent, need I remind you that you are but a mere three decades old?" Hades turned around slowly, silhouettes of the blue flames that he once had dancing on his head, warding off most souls that were on the Isle, "And I...I am far too old for you, aren't I?" "A little older than my first, but never too old to be loved." Maleficent was still stretched out across the bed, her back bare and covered by a feather cloak, the closest thing to her lost wings, and Hades sat down beside her, his expression unreadable.
"Your first...who sawed off those immeasurable wings of yours." Hades muttered, pulling the cloak away to reveal the two long, ugly scars that trailed down and far, only to meet along the middle of her back. "What if I did the same, Mal?" Hades stroked a single finger down one of the two scars, coming to stop at a small feather, blackened and dead, "Will you ever forgive me? I do not wish to do so...but I am not a protector of women's hearts, or so I am told..."
"I am not Persephone. I am willing, Hades. But betray me, and that will be the end of me...and the end of us. I have had my trust shattered once...you taught me how to trust again." Maleficent shuddered, but she did not move away from his touch, and neither did she pull the cloak back on, "Hades...I love you. If I never understood what love was, let it be clear...that I have learned, and I now love." "You have always known it. You just didn't know if it was right." Hades pulled the cloak back, covering up her scars once more, and he laid down beside her in a fluid motion, "But I am there, and will be there, always."
"So let me rephrase your sentence..."
"Will you marry me, Maleficent?"

Marriage, as it seemed, wasn't quite as easily held as it was said.
"What do you mean, we can't get married?" Hades boomed at Yen Sid, who was the only ambassador from Auradon to be permanently residing on the isle, as well as the only voluntary one to do so, "They've stolen our magic from our reach, the bigger part of our lives! And now...Now, we can't even get married?" "It's not 'can't get married', but 'can't get married yet'." Yen Sid spoke calmly, something incredibly hard to do while the former lord of the underworld was shouting at you, and Hades's flames began to dance even more rigorously, "Yet?? What is the meaning of this?"
"I've already sent your appeal to King Beast. Whether he approves or not...will depend on the reply he will send soon." Yen Sid said, with a tone of a very zen attitude, "After all, it is crucial...as your union will mean a formidable one, and any fruit of it will be a terrible danger, should a rebellion arise." "My, my, how despicable we are." Hades's lips twitched as he gave a rather infuriated smile, "Being evil just for evil's sake."
"You Auradonians robbed us of our magic." Hades continued, his eyes narrowing, "Even dabbled with the forbidden and performed necromancy to bring some back alive, overriding the Fates just for one mistake they did." "All of this, going against Gaia and the way of the Fates, just to imprison us in a life worse than death..." Hades's smile looked like he wanted to eat the wizened sorcerer alive and whole, "I think many of the villains rather they'd have died."
"That we could not allow. You are a god, Lord Hades, and the one who ruled over the souls of the Underworld. Disrespect you, I dare not. But I say this: With what happened to Hercules, and with you currently being on the Isle, do you think that King Beast would dare to leave these villains dead? It is but for a good reason, your Lordship; what if they had colluded with you, or you with them?" Yen Sid stated, as one might state that it was raining, or that two plus two gave you four, and Hades could no longer uphold that threatening scowl.
"We have not become the way we are, just because we wanted to be evil." Hades growled, his obsidian eyes boring deep into the sorcerer's skull, "What are we? Beings to be scorned? Animals on display for you all to mock? We became like this because all of us wanted something, something that could have belonged to us, but something that you all stole. We wanted a happy ending." "At the cost of us." Yen Sid spoke absently, and the sorcerer swore he saw the God grow in height briefly, and the little flames that were all that remained of the Lord's glory turned a vibrant red.
"Did you not get your happy endings at the expense of us too?" Hades roared, the tips of his teeth sharpening to spikes, and Yen Sid was glad that Hades had chosen to do all these when it had been just the two of them alone. "Perhaps, if you all hadn't wanted the happy ending, we would not have had it, and the villains might not have ended in this state. Ambition and greed are the devils behind all. Those who succumb will pay the price." Yen Sid muttered softly, not wanting Hades to continue the shouting match, and the Lord of the Underworld took a deep breath, in a vague attempt to calm himself down.
"Tell Beast that I don't care what he does to the rest of them. But we want our lives. We want a say in our miserable state too. If he really wanted our opinions, he'd respect our choices in this union." Hades glowered, but made no further threats, and Yen Sid smiled at him, "Of course."
And with that, the Lord of the Underworld turned away, leaving the sorcerer to once again take a deep breath and thank that Hades had not intended to eat him alive.
