Behind These Eyes

Chapter 32~Sadie Roberts

I get in Liam's truck Saturday night. My stomach is tight with nerves. What if we get caught? They've probably done this kind of stuff a hundred times but there's still a good chance.

"It'll be fine." Liam laughs, reading my mind.

I roll my eyes. "We could end up in jail!"

Liam shrugs. "Have you seen the police nowadays? They won't care, trust me on this. We just light the fireworks and leave."

"Then why are we even going?"

"Well, we hang out before lighting the fireworks of course."

I nod although Liam's words don't comfort me at all. What if we go to jail? What if it sabotages my chances of getting into college or university? What if I make a fool out of myself and don't ever get invited again?

When we arrive at Moyie Lake, I hear laughter down a trail. Liam grabs his phone and truck keys before we get out.

"What will mom and dad think?" I whisper.

Liam gives me an irritated look. "Will you calm down? Everything will be fine. Now stop being a buzzkill and have some fun." Liam pauses. "There's someone I want you to meet anyway so just try to be cool."

I nod, not trusting my mouth to speak. If I do, Liam might just leave me in the truck.

We walk down the path until we see a fire, several people walking past it while others hang out on the logs around it. I see a figure walk out from behind a tree, two boys behind her.

"Sadie, you made it." It's Sasha. Behind her is Adam and a guy with straight red hair.

"Of course." I smile, hoping to convince her that I'm a lot more confident than I really am.

Sasha turns to the guys. "Sadie, I'm sure you've met my boyfriend, Adam, before..."

Adam gives me a polite smile and I return it.

"...and Jason..."

Jason looks me over, saying nothing. When I catch his eye, I smile. He stares blankly back.

Sasha moves on. If she sees the awkwardness, she doesn't show it. "By the fire is Violet, Luke, James, Carrie..." She continues to list a few more but I'm sure I won't remember half of their names. Not that they would even care. They all seem pretty caught up in their own conversations, not caring what's going on around them.

I see Liam work his way over to a girl...maybe Violet? He sits down next to her and they start talking. I notice her laugh, a playful look in her eyes. Are they dating? Why wouldn't I know about it? Have I been that caught up in Jesse's death? I guess I really have missed out on a lot because of it.

I snap out of my thoughts. Sasha and Adam have left to talk to a boy and girl. I'm left with Jason. Who is now leaning against a tree, looking at his phone.

I try to start up a conversation. "So, do you go to Mount Baker High?"

Jason looks up and raises his eyebrows. He seems a bit shocked that I'm talking. Although, by the way things seem with him, I'm guessing not many people do talk to him. "No, I graduated last year."

I nod, wishing he had found a way to continue the conversation. "Are you going to college or university then?"

"Next year, College Of The Rockies probably." He puts his phone in the pocket of his leather jacket. It's a start I suppose.

"Cool, what are you going to do?"

He frowns. "I...sorry but, why are you still talking to me?"

I blink, shocked at his nerve. "Excuse me?"

Jason shakes his head. "I mean, it's pretty obvious I'm not exactly wanting to talk at the moment."

I take a deep breath. "Ok, I'll leave, continue playing on your phone." I spin around to leave but his voice stops me.

At first, I think he's going to apologize but I'm not even shocked when he doesn't bother to even mention his rudeness. "I'm actually in the middle of breaking up with someone."

I turn back, my eyes narrowing. "You seem like just the person that would break someone's heart by text."

Jason sighs, shaking his head. "You've got it all wrong. She's breaking up with me."

My gaze softens. "Oh, I'm so sorry..."

Jason shrugs. "It is what it is...don't you have someone else you should be talking to though?"

I give a small snort. "Like who? In case you haven't noticed, I don't even know anyone besides my brother...and I guess Sasha."

"Maybe the guy your brother's trying to set you up with tonight..."

I snap my attending back to Jason. "What?"

Jason hesitates. "You didn't hear it from me..."

"You have to tell me-I'm not going to date anyone Liam sets me up with." I search the crowd of people.

Jason pauses. "You should talk to Liam about that...look, I think Adam and Sasha are starting up fireworks."

I know he's just trying to distract me but either way, it works. Sure enough, Sasha is standing with a lighter while Adam sets down a few boxes of fireworks.

Buckets of water are poured over the fire and everything goes dark. I feel a hand brush the side of my arm, making me jump a bit.

"When they light the first firework," Jason's voice whispers, "run to the nearest vehicle. Everyone's going to the Cranbrook mall. No winners but the last one there has to skip the next hangout."

I nod before realizing he can't see me. "Ok."

As soon as I say it, I see a firework go off.

I race out of the woods and find the nearest vehicle, a red Toyota car. The driver inside is just doing up their seat belt and they unlock the passenger door.

I jump in and shut the door behind me. I begin to do up my seat belt and say thank you. Then I look at the driver and gasp. His hair is grey and his dark eyes look crazy. I definitely don't think we're playing the same game.

"Sorry! Wrong car!" I start to open the door but it's locked. "Can you please unlock the door?"

The guy gives a wicked laugh and starts up the car. I go to grab my phone but for probably the first time in years, it isn't on me. I was so excited for tonight that I must have forgotten about it and left it at home!

Meanwhile, the man starts driving. I bang in the window, hoping someone will see me in the dark. Will anyone even notice that I'm gone? I don't think so.

"Please let me go...I really don't want to hurt anyone..." I beg, tears starting to stream down my cheeks. Where is he going to take me? Or worse...what is he going to do to me?
