Clove
"CLOVE!" My mom yells "GET UP"! I jump out of bed because I remember what day it is. It's reaping day! I am going to volunteer for sure now that I'm 18! There is only one problem, Cato. He is my boyfriend and I'm totally in love with him! I obviously don't show it because I need to keep up my tough, scary girl reputation. When we are alone, I go all crazy in love. I just hope he volunteers to so we can be together. I walk down stairs in my emerald green dress, and my black, glossy hair in a high ponytail. My mom oohs and awes for a bit then we eat. The silence is killing me so I finally say "I'm going to volunteer"! My mom stares at me in disbelief then shouts "WHAT?! You can't volunteer baby! I love you and you are my only child!" I stare at her for a while then sigh. "Ok mom" I lie "I won't volunteer." She gives me a big hug and says "thank you sweetie. Now, let's get going." We walk out the door and to the reaping.
Cato
I woke up bright and early this morning. I am so excited for the reaping. I am totally going to volunteer now that I'm 18 and my brothers are to chicken to even try! One problem; Clove. I love her so much, but I need to honour my district! My parents told me if I don't then I don't belong here. I am wearing my nice black suit and am eating with my family. We are all dead silent until we hear the bells outside meaning we have to go to the square.

I am lined up in the 18 year old boys section when I see Clove. She just got to her section and looks over at me I giver her a nod of reassurance and look forward once the anthem starts up. Our escort, Truffina Bellesburg, start up on the long boring speech about the Dark Days and how we must repay the Capital, blah, blah, blah. Then she finally says "now to pick the lucky male and female tributes to honour District Two in the 74th Hunger Games". She crosses over to the ladies bowl and says in an annoyingly chirpy voice "Ladies first". She fishes around in the bowl for a bit the plucks out a single paper. Please, please, please, I think, don't be Clove! Truffina crosses back to the podium and opens the paper.
"Clove Hollows"
Clove
"Clove Hollows". Every muscle in my body freezes. People move to the sides as I walk stiffly to the stage. I wanted to volunteer but now that I'm up here I feel, for the first time, terrified about what the Games will bring. " Do we have any volunteers from the 18 year old females?" Truffina asks. The square is dead silent. What the heck?! Almost everyone volunteers every year! "All right then" Truffina says, slightly surprised "now for the boys". She strides over to the ball with the boys names. She digs in a bit then pulls out a single paper. She walks to the podium and reads the name. "Zachary Shalem" she reads aloud. As soon as she reads the name I hear "I VOLUNTEER AS TRIBUTE!" And immediately I know who it is. Cato.
Cato
"Zachary Shalem" Truffina reads.
Before i even realize it I am running up to the stage shouting "I VOLUNTEER AS TRIBUTE!". I am on the stage before Truffina even says to come up. "Alright then" she says a little taken back " what's your name son"? I put on a solemn face and reply "Cato Knifepoint". She nods her head and says "well go on you two shake hands".
I shake hands with Clove and give her a reassuring squeeze. With that the anthem plays and the peacekeepers guide us into the Justice Building to say our final goodbyes.
