Contact Made With Disastrous Consequences

This morning, a council formed by the United Nations responded to a broadcast put out by the alien spaceships, now over the Pacific Ocean. The message contained a standard message of peaceful intentions. No government or organization has yet released the content of the initial broadcast.
Approximately one hour after the response, one of the seven ships fired laser weapons into the Pacific Ocean. Many governments, including those of the United States and Russia, are now treating whatever creatures that created these ships as a hostile force.
