"Turn it up!" I yelled to my boyfriend in the driver's seat. My favorite song finally came on the radio and I was about to beautifully deliver every single line to it.
He reaches his non-driving hand out and turns the nob as far as it will go. The melodious tune fills my every thought and enters every breath. All I can focus on is the sick beat and insane lyrics.
"She wants to dance like Uma Thurman. Bury me til I confess," I sing. Hunter just grins and glances at me from the rear-view mirror. His best friend, Eric, who is sitting shotgun, tries his best not to laugh at my attempt to sound like Patrick Stump. I don't care if I'm not the best singer, I'm enjoying myself. This is fun no matter what Eric thinks.
As I'm about to launch into the first verse, I notice something odd. A car on the other side of the highway is soaring down the road at impeccably fast speeds and doesn't seem to be slowing down. Then the car starts swerving all over the road and sometimes crosses over into the lane we were heading down. As we get closer and closer to it, it starts staying in our side for dangerously large amounts of time.
"Get on the shoulder!" I bark at Hunter who, for some ungodly reason, has decided to stay in the direct path of the crazy driver.
Hunter opens his mouth to say something as he puts on his blinker, but his words quickly turn into shouts as we all see that there is no time. That car is going to hit us head on no matter what we do. We are as good as dead.
As realization sets in, I begin to scream as well. My shouting blends into Eric's and Hunter's and in my last second, I sheild my face with one hand and dial 911 with the other.
The car tries to get back into it's own lane when it's only centimeters away from crashing, but it still hits the front of the drivers side, causing our vehicle to go spinning around in the middle of the road. The impact makes my seat-belt tighten to the point that if I were to move, it would probably cut me. The internal damage is so bad that I can barely see and hear my boyfriend. No, wait. I can't hear him at all. Eric's yelling is clearly defined, but Hunter's in nonexistent. Oh my god.
"Hunter!" I scream his names at the top of my lungs, but he does not respond. Not that he could anyways, since the damage on our side restricts us from moving, but Hunter would find someway to do it.
The car stops spinning and all becomes silent. For a second, I lose track of where I am and what happened. I'm even pretty sure I blacked out. It's the voice of lady on my phone that brings me back to earth.
"Ma'am, are you able to speak? Ma'am, can you tell me what happened? Ma'am, can you tell me if anyone was hurt?"
I notice that I'm still tightly clutching my phone in my left hand, yet I'm unable to move it to my head. You know, that was actually pretty smart of me to use my last possible moment alive to call 911. Maybe an ambulance will get here before I die or before one of the guys die. Unless, they're already dead. No, I refuse to think that. Hunter's alive. He has to be.
"A car hit us and it's pretty bad. I'm not too hurt and neither is my friend, but I think the driver of my car and the other is. Please help us!" I cry out, praying that the person could hear me.
"Can you tell us what road you're on?" She calmly asks like four or more lives aren't possibly at stake here.
"Uh," I struggle to remember what the last sign we passed said. My mother always told me to pay attention to where I'm going in case something like this happens. I do my best to make out the building in front of the shattered windshield. It's yellow and red and there seems to be a playground. Suddenly, I know exactly where we are. "We are in front of the McDonald's on East Main! Please help!"
