"DID YOU HEAR?"

people in your class love gossiping, not that you don't - you love it as well, but with kuroo away, you can't help but feel a little lonely. so instead of sitting in your usual seat which would be next to him and missing the boy, you decide to join in, pulling a chair up next to some of your friends and casually joining the conversation.

"so what are we talking about?" you drawl, playing with the edges of your sleeves and pretending that you don't constantly overthink every word that comes out of your mouth. one of the girls in your class gives you a strange look, and you hold your hands up to her. "hey, sorry if i'm interrupting. but i just wanted you guys to fill me in."

"no, i know." the girl shakes her head, dismissing your words, "i'm just surprised you didn't hear." she throws her head back and laughs, "it's all everyone's been talking out."

"she'd know if she wasn't always with kuroo." one of the girls in your class laugh, you sink back into your seat and wrap your arms around yourself, suddenly feeling more self conscious than before when the circle joins in, softly giggling amongst themselves.

noticing your discomfort, the girl slings an arm over your shoulder, a lopsided grin plastered on their lips. "hey, i'm just kiddin'! i actually think the two of you are like, super cute! opposites attract or whateverrr!" other people in your class chime in and nod, agreeing - you decide to change the subject.

"so what's this big news i'm in the dark about?" you raise an eyebrow, as the girl next to you takes their arm off your shoulders, they let out a dreamy sigh, leaning forward and resting their chin on the palm of their hands.

"it's a new student," the girl glances at you from the corner of their hazel eyes. "apparently, it's a foreigner too! can 'ya believe it? we haven't had a new kid since the start of the year!" they run a hand through their silky brown hair, "i just hope they are nice - whoever they are."

there's a low murmur in the circle as people express their agreement with the girl's statement.

you scrunch your nose in confusion, "but it's the middle of the year? i didn't even know you could join like that, do you know who it could be?"

the girl shakes her head, "no idea. but akrithi's cousin, nana, said her mum's boyfriend's nephew's friend saw them at the shopping center near karasuno, so all anyone knows right now is that he's blonde and has greenish eyes."

"huh." you muse, an uneasy feeling takes over you suddenly. it's not bad, but it isn't good either. the circle continues talking, a low murmur of conversation fills the classroom and you wrap your arms around yourself, trepidation looming over you almost tauntingly.

the girl next to you raises an eyebrow at your sudden change in body language. they poke your shoulder, "you alright? i'm sorry if i said something about you and kuroo, i was joking." you shake your head and stand up abruptly, managing to give her a thin smile.

"i'm just feeling a little dizzy," you explain, pushing your chair back into the desk you got it from and tidying up your things, "i think i'm going to head out and go to the nurse's office for a second, do you think - ?"

before you can finish your sentence, the homegroup teacher suddenly walks in. she drops her heavy stack of thick books on her desk with a loud 'thump' that echoes off the class' walls. silence falls over every student as people scurry to their seats. her lips are twisted into an ugly frown as she walks to the front of the class, leaning against the mahogany table and crossing his arms. "children," she addresses the lot of you.

"as some of you are aware," her eyes scan every student and she tilts her chin up. disdain seeps through her usually crisp, clipped and professional tone of voice when she speaks, eyes sliding over to the door of the class. you sink into your seat, heart racing and palms sweaty. "we have a new student joining our home group for the remainder of the school year."

excited murmurs and eager speculations about the new kid arise among the class in the form of quiet conversation but they're quickly silenced when the teacher silently holds a hand up in the air. everyone shuts up immediately. you anxiously dig your nails into the skin of your hands, leaving crescent marks littered on your palms.

"you may come in now."
