"YOU STILL UP?"
kuroo mumbles under his breath quietly, lazily draping a hand over your stomach and listening to the steady rise and fall of your relaxed breathing. "y/n?" he gently nudges your shoulder to try and get a response.
"shut uuuup." you groan, moving his hand off your body and turning over on your side so your back is to him. you forcefully open your eyes to the faint glow of the red numbers of his alarm clock which tell you it's two twenty-three am.
"come closer." kuroo whispers, pulling the fuzzy pink blanket on his bed over your shoulders, the boy reaches his arm out to softly get a hold your shoulders and pull you closer to him body. "now it's warmer, aren't you cold?"
"i don't know, are you?" you turn the question onto him, leaning into his warm embrace and resting your hands on top of his, which is comfortably draped around your waist.
the boy next to you yawns quietly, resting his chin on the top of your head. mulling the question over, kuroo can't help but notice how nice your hair smells, "dunno, i'm just not tired enough to sleep — you smell nice, by the way."
"thanks," a tired laugh slips past your lips, as your eyes flutter shut because of how tired you are. "i'm gonna take that as a compliment." you mutter, feeling kuroo's minty breath on the back of your neck. "you smell like toothpaste, tetsu."
"maybe 'cause i brushed my teeth before i went to bed?" he raises an eyebrow in the dark, eyes trailing from your form to the lone window in his room, looking out at his front yard while rain falls against the pane with the soft sound of it's drops gently hitting the glass.
"this is nice." you sigh in content, enjoying the feeling of being wrapped up in his arms and held close to his heart. "you ever wish a moment ... could last forever?" you drift off, exhaustion taking over you as your heart and mind give in, falling into a relaxed rhythm.
kuroo lowly hums in agreement, the sound reverberating from his chest as he smiles against your skin — golden eyes brimming with love, "with you? always." the boy notices your silence and how your hand has relaxed, no longer holding on to his as tightly.
softly chuckling, kuroo leans in to kiss the top of your head, eyes fluttering shut as he gives in to the sandman too, "goodnight, love."
light from the rising sun filters through the airy curtains on kuroo's window, falling on the side of his face. "$#%&." with an exasperated cry of irritation, he throws the warm blanket over his head and holds a hand out to reach for you.
"y/nnn? where are you?" he groans lowly, squinting his eyes and trying to block the lazy light of the rising sun by holding a hand up against it's warm rays. the boy sits up with a huff, "what happened to never leaving me alone, huh?"
kuroo throws his legs over the edge of his bed and rubs his eyes, letting out an inhumane yawn that sounds like a whole ass motorbike engine sound. the boy shrugs into an oversized shirt and flings the door wide open, trudging down the stairs and making his way to the kitchen to try find you, "y/n?" he calls out, entering the kitchen.
kuroo blinks at the sight — you greet him with an energetic wave, one of your hands holding a spatula and one on your waist, before quickly turning back to the stove and glancing at him over your shoulder, "morning, sleeping beauty! you up for some breakfast?"
"it's literally six am." he points to the kitchen clock and scrunches his nose, "who the fuck starts their day this early?"
"bitch, don't tell me you forgot." you roll your eyes and hold the pan up, attempting to flip the pancake — only for it to crease and fall straight back onto the pan, splashing in the melted butter. "shit! can you grab me a paper towel and get out the raspberries?"
"okay, but why are we eating breakfast as sunrise?" kuroo raises an eyebrow in confusion, reaching into the pantry and pulling out raspberries and some leftover orange juice. "this feels weird, i want to go back to bed with you."
"that sounds wrong. anyways!" grabbing a paper towel from his hands, you shake your head in disappointment at how he's forgotten something that's supposed to be so important to him; "how did you just forget?"
"forget?"
"you're leaving today? for the karasuno practice match?" you pile up the pancakes on a pretty white plate and reach for two pairs of forks and knives. "you sounded so excited about it when you were telling me yesterday, the whole cats vs crows thing?"
"oh my god!" kuroo gasps, slapping a hand over his mouth in shock, "i completely forgot because of everything that happened in between! thank you so much, y/n!" he gives you two very enthusiastic thumbs up before running back up the stairs to go and pack his bag.
"honestly, that idiot. what would he do without me?" you turn back to the breakfast table and continue setting it up with a fond smile painted on your lips.
"honestly? i think he'd be a completely different tetsurou than the one we know." a familiar voice suddenly startles you, disrupting the quiet atmosphere of the kitchen — you almost drop the fragile glass bottle holding the thick and sweet maple syrup in surprise.
golden eyes meet e/c eyes and your smile falters as you dip your head in respect to the woman standing in front of you, dark hair put into hot pink curlers and a mint green bathrobe strung on her larger figure. "mrs kuroo! um, sorry for waking you up and ..." you awkwardly trail off, "you know, yesterday."
the woman only sighs, perching onto one of the bar stools placed behind the kitchen bench and resting her chin on the palm of her calloused hands. silence falls over the pair of you, so you turn back to work, grimacing at the atmosphere. for a moment, she says nothing and only watches you lay out the plates and decorate the pancakes with berries.
"you know," she hesitates for a second before picking herself up again, "y/n — was it?" when you nod awkwardly, she continues with a soft smile gracing her aged features. "i appreciate you being a good friend to my son, and i'm glad he has someone like you."
"friend?"
"i saw through the act you both put on yesterday." she says nonchalantly, examining her nails which are painted in a vivid red colour. "he may be my son, but he also is his father's — so i know there's no way he could pull someone like you." she winks at you, a sly smile on her face. "don't tell him i said that, though. you can keep a secret, yes?"
"yes, i think i can, mrs kuroo." you return her smile with one of your own, slightly relaxing n her presence, you might have started off on the wrong foot, but maybe her company isn't the worst.
"no need to be so formal, y/n." the elder woman laughs, reaching out for a glass to pour herself some orange juice for breakfast. "you can just call me mina, i think we'll be seeing eachother a lot more from now on, right?"
"mum!!" kuroo clambers down the stairs, dressed in his school's sports shirt and a pair of grey sweats with a duffel bag slung over his shoulder and his phone in his hands. "stop flirting with y/n! get your own girlfriend."
mina throws her head back, laughing at her son's words before meeting your eyes again. she sets a finger to her lips and smiles.
"so,"
kuroo sets his things down and pulls out a chair for both you and him, an eager glint in his golden eyes as he licks his lips in anticipation, eyeing the table before him and flashing you a goofy grin, "what's for breakfast?"
