"OF COURSE I HAVE ONE!"
kuroo exclaims, eyes glancing between his sceptical parents.
his dad, mr kuroo, shakes his head, taking a sip of his golden champagne and setting the cup down. "i'll believe it when i see her, son."
"you're kidding! why do you think wouldn't i have a girlfriend?" he protests, "i'm perfect boyfriend material!" the boy stabs some steak with his fork when his mother laughs.
"and yet you're still single." she teases him, a warm look in her golden eyes as her husband sets a hand on his wife's shoulder.
"no shame in that, 'surou." his dad beams, winking at the woman sitting besides him. "best not to rush this relationship thing, y'know? wait for the perfect one."
kuroo looks up from his plate, an unamused expression on his features. "dad,,,, please stop winking at mum." he deadpans.
his parents only giggle as he drums his fingers on the dining table, lost in thought. "but how do you know?" he asks, genuinely confused. "how are you sure?"
"sure about what?" his dad asks, raising a dark brow at his son, who is an exact copy of him except for his mother's golden, honeyed eyes.
"if you've found the perfect one?" kuroo sighs wearily, his fingers still absently drumming a broken melody on the wooden table. "how do you tell if she's the one you want to give your heart to?"
"you never for sure," his father reaches out for mrs kuroo's hands, taking them in his own and squeezing them lightly. "love is always just a leap of faith, 'surou. but ..."
"if you get this fuzzy feeling in your heart and lose all sense of logic and reasoning around her," his father beams, planting a chaste kiss on his wife's cheek, "you're pretty damn close son."
"oh — you handsome man." his mother blushes at her husbands words. the teenager ignores his parents' flirtatious remarks, lost in his own train of thought.
'deny it all you want, lover boy.'
'you must really like me, huh?'
'love is a big word.'
"a leap of faith?" kuroo muses, eyes trailing to his phone as it sits on the table in front of him. the boy smiles when an idea comes to him — "we'll see about that."
you throw a blanket over yourself and relax, reaching out for the novel on your bedside table and taking it in your hands, an excited grin on your lips.
"finally, some time to myself, i can finish this book now." you sigh contently and flick to the page where your bookmark is inserted.
your eyes barely manage to scan the first sentence when your phone rings, you close the book shut and reach for your phone, eyeing the caller id before pressing accept, "tetsu?"
"Y/N!!!!!" he whisper shouts.
"what the fuck." you wince, moving the speaker further away from your ear. "why are you so damn loud?"
"it's urgent! you're my girlfriend now!!"
"at least take me out to dinner first," you laugh, "i know you're in love with me but i think we're moving too fast."
"no!" kuroo adds in, exasperated. "you're not my actual girlfriend!"
"this phone call is full of surprises, isn't it?" you scrunch your nose at his words.
"my parents were teasing me and i panicked and i miiiight have just told them i'm dating someone when i'm really not and they miiiight have just asked me to invite you over for dinner to prove i'm not lying so. yeah."
"just tell them i'm busy??" you suggest, longingly glancing at the book on your bedside table. "you caught me at a bad time so tell your parents i can't be there, okay?"
"then they're going to know i'm lying!" kuroo groans, desperately pleading. "please y/n l/n, my dearest, pretty girl, queen, goddess, beloved, darling, sussy baka, pogchamp, wifey, kitt—"
"don't finish that word." you cut him off before he can say it and shudder, "you have no self worth, kuroo."
"only when it comes to you. now please come over and pretend to be my girlfriend," he asks quietly, "i really need you right now, y/n."
your eyes wander to your book, and you reach out for it. i just wanted to fucken' read, bro. you shake your head and sigh wearily, making up your mind.
"fine," you throw the blanket off your body and stand up, walking towards your bathroom and setting your phone between your ear and shoulder, tying/tucking your hair back
"give me fifteen minutes to get ready and i'll be there, alright?" you speak, a hair tie in between your teeth as you turn on your tap, waiting for the water to warm up.
"yes!!! thank you so much, my saviour." he grins, lowering his voice when his dad calls for him from the dining room.
"hey 'surou! is your girlfriend finally coming over?" the elder man snorts, taking a sip of his champagne.
"yeah dad!" he yells back, itching to see the look on his dads face when you show up to the door as his girlfriend — "just gimme one minute."
"i'll see you in a bit, tetsu." you say, moving your phone off your shoulder, a finger hovering over the red 'end call' icon on your screen.
"oh! one more thing y/n." he snickers, "if we want this to be believable, you should probably call me something else instead of my name like—"
you end the call before he finishes his sentence, an irritated look on your face when you run your fingers under the (now) warm water of the tap. "this idiot ..."
"kuroo as a boyfriend?" you hum, thinking it over before you splash some water over your flustered face, "never mind, that shit doesn't even sound right."
you nod your head in an effort to reassure yourself, "he'd be a shit boyfriend... right?" the words sink in and you sigh, running a hand through your messy hair in defeat.
" ... who the fuck am i kidding?"
