When Fillie stepped off the ferry, she exhaled heavily. The air was salty and moist, nothing like back home. There, the air was thin and hard to get enough of, yet always felt crisp and fresh. It was cold, colder than cold. If you drew a breath to quickly, you'd start coughing. That was life in Alaska, Fili thought. But here, in the Outer Banks, the humid air seemed inescapable, close to suffocating for the Alaskan girl.
"Outer Banks, Paradise on Earth" the sign lead. She rolled her eyes at it, walking past it. The tourists must've loved that sign, some good old reassurance they'd chosen the right vacation spot. But there weren't many tourists there now. It was early November, which meant it was getting colder.
Fewer tourists wasn't exactly good in her situation. Less tourists meant less opportunity to blend in, disappear in the crowd, which was the opposite of what Fili needed. But it was possible to blend in. She just had to be careful. The Outer Banks was a long way from Alaska. Maybe he wouldn't find her here, not for a while at least. And that was good enough.

The girl wandered around the island aimlessly for a while, no specific destination in mind. She was hoping she'd stumble across a motel or some place to crash for the night, but there seemed to be no such thing in the area.
The island was bigger then she remembered, and so were the huge houses that surrounded her. Rich people. The girl had sort of like a love-hate relationship with them. The condescending smirks, snarky comments and the everlasting supply of Polo Shirts was enough to fuel her hate for them. She hated the way the used to much hairgel for their own good, and walked around with their noses up in the air. She got second hand embarrassment from them, honestly.
The Alaskan hadn't grown up with a lot of money to spare. Elodie had worked hard to provide for her daughter, but it wasn't always enough. Sometimes she had to go hungry. But that was okay. That was life.
But several years later, after her mothers' passing, she was the new breadwinner of the family. Her father didn't work, his main occupation being alcohol. After she had gained recognition for her surfing, money was definitely one of the benefits. At least it was to her father. More money for liquor.
Suddenly, she heard a couple faint voices far behind her, snapping her out of her thoughts. Boys' voices. She walked slower, intentionally eavesdropping.
"Y'all are going to the kegger tonight, right?" one of them asked.
"Hell yeah. Bet those dirty Pogues will be there though."
Her eyes lit up. Kegger? Good place to get wasted. Good place to get distracted. But she couldn't go alone to the kegger, she wouldn't know where to go. She needed those boys. So, in the hopes of getting some good liquor in her system, she turned to the boys, swaying her hips and giving them a flirty smile.
"I'm sorry, did one of you say 'kegger'? Cause I'm new around here, and I'd love to have maybe one of you boys show me around." She batted her eyelashes, knowing the effect it would have.
They looked at her with mixed expressions, eyebrows raised and mouth agape.
Soon enough, the tall blond stepped forward, his eyes studying every detail of her as his lips formed a funny smirk. "Always room for a pretty girl", he said.
The brunette girl smiled again, tilting her head as she stuck out her hand casually towards him.
"I'm Fili."
The tall blond stuck out his hand- only to smooth his side-parted hair as he checked her out again.
The hell was he doing?
Fili raised an eyebrow at his odd behaviour- to which he laughed over-confidently, finally meeting her hand.
"I'm Rafe. This is Kelce and Topper." Each of the boys' beside him nodded enthusiastically, murmering 'Hi's' to the girl.
"Nice to meet you guys," She said, gently pulling her hand back from Rafe's grip. Instead, Rafe held onto her tighter, pulling her towards him and then putting his arm hastily around her.
"You're lucky you ran in to us, you know." Rafe uttered in hear ear as they walked, "there are dirty people on this island, low-lives that live on The Cut and can't even afford to clean themselves up. It's ridiculous."
His friends laughed, eating up his condescending statement. But Fili almost gagged in reflex to his words- man, she really didn't like rich people.

That's a wrap!
