The pair arrived on the beach only 10 minutes after their previous conversation, boards in hand.
Fili was wearing jean-shorts and a red bikini top, adapting to the humid weather. Her brown hair flew around her face, partially covering her sight to her annoyance. Finally, she exhaled deeply, pulling out a hair-tie and making a low bun. With both her eyes available again, her gaze began to wander- naturally landing on JJ. She couldn't help it. His hair was wild and messy and blew furiously in the wind. Her eyes trailed up and down his back, and she realised how good looking the blonde really was, all muscles and tanned. But suddenly, his eyes caught hers, and JJ immediately smirked.
"You checking me out?"
"What's there to check out?"
"Don't deny it, I saw you." He said contentedly.
"Oh please, you're too nice to yourself."
"Just admit it, you have a little thing for me don't you?"
" I do not." Fili groaned impatiently, and JJ's smirk grew.
"Uh-oh- did I hit a nerve?"
"Your cockiness definitely is hitting a nerve, yes."
"Touche."
They were silent for a while, walking side by side while the wind whistled in their ears. Just when they reached the water, JJ stopped in front of her.
"You sure you know how to do this?" his voice was unsure, "The tide here at Rixon's is not particularly nice. There are other beaches-
"I'm sure." she stated calmly.
"Ok, just don't like, drown." He said with sarcasm, but Fili could tell there was a hint of concern too. She didn't really understand why. Why would he worry? They barely knew each other- but even so, she almost liked it, or appreciated it at least. It was cute, she thought. He was actually cute. Cocky but cute.
"You too." She replied, reaching up and ruffling his blonde hair before jogging past him.
It was a windy day in the Outer Banks. The waves were bigger than normal, large enough to scare any amateurs away. Still somehow, they were nowhere near the waves in Alaska. There, the waves were large and majestic, unforgiving. One wrong move on your board and the wave would send you tumbling down a spiral of darkness and ice cold water, odds of surviving low. But Fili loved that. That thrill was what made her feel alive. Until it killed her.
She and JJ ran through the sand and into the cool water, occasionally splashing each other while the other swam away. Soon enough, they paddled out on their boards on to the waves. They were at the optimal starting point.
"You go first!" Fili yelled to the boy.
"Don't mind if I do!"
And with that, JJ was paddling quickly in the opposite direction of the big wave approaching him. Just as the wave reached him he hopped up, gliding steadily just below it. His movements were swift and automatic, like he'd done it a million times before. Fili was impressed. Not too shabby. She saw JJ ride the wave all the way to shore, which left her alone out on the waves.
"Your turn! Let's see what you got, Vagabond!" JJ shouted from the shore. It was faint, slightly silenced by the wind and light rain.
Fili watched a few waves pass her one by one, all too small for her. She heard distant thunder, but ignored it's warnings. She needed a good wave. She wasn't giving up now.
A few more minutes went buy, and Fili felt herself grow impatient. None of the waves were doing it for her. They were growing bigger, sure, but they needed to grow angry for Fili to ride them. She needed big and unpredictable. Otherwise, it just didn't feel right.
