'Aleksander' she whispered as she plunged the dagger deeper into his heart.

'Forgive me' he breathed.

With that his stormy grey eyes, wet with tears, clouded over. A quiet gurgle escaped his lips. Blood now ran out of his mouth, down his smooth pale skin. For perhaps the first time Alina saw him for what he truly was, just a boy carrying the same burden of power as her.

She felt her hands, now sticky with the Darkling's blood, grow shaky and weak. Her mouth went dry. The hot blood was his and mals and clung to her hands, body and hair ferociously. Like her it was not yet willing to let go. Alina's body collapsed and she fell back onto the sandy ground.

The world grew dark around her. In the heart of the fold, surrounded by shadows and volcra, Alina felt a hole grow in the pit of her stomach. In that moment it was darker than anything that the Darkling ever made. It was like a bullet hole being ripped open again and again, filling with air and darkness and night and nothingness.

The emptiness was so absolute that she didn't notice when two nichevo'ya bundled the darkling away, nor when she and mal were carried by strangers hands onto an empty skiff. Nor did she notice the quite thrum of power that returned around her neck, her wrist and now, her hands.
