Through the Eyes of Another

A silver creature came charging at me,

Quite content not to let me be.

Their intent to kill shown with each step,

So into a fighting stance I doth leapt.

A gleaming tongue bathed in liquid red,

Flickered and swished near its head.

I knew then that death had come to my brother,

And without victory would soon be dealt to another.

I ran forward in an attempt to intimidate,

Who would win this war would be decided by fate.

We begin to circle slowly, steadily around,

With the melody of distant cries, groans and roars in the background.

And thus we began our fierce battle,

As a roar in my throat did rattle.

Our deadly and elegant dance did begin,

With the knowledge one of us will commit a sin.

My opponent was indeed skilled,

As I dodged attempts to be killed.

Don’t loose focus, don’t look away,

Or else I’ll never again see the light of day.

Though after many hours long,

Our strength was fading, the sunlight gone.

Both wanting it to be over, both wanting it not,

We were loosing ourselves, the focus, the plot.

Then from nowhere an opening I saw,

As their defence began to flaw.

With that I knew the end was near,

And the last expression would be one of fear.

I did not stall, linger or wait,

His life I did hurriedly take.

Making it painless and quick,

Like blowing out flame on a wick.

When the deed was done,

And bittersweet victory was won,

I glanced down at my opponent, the human beast,

Whose death was honourable at least.

The human warrior had fought for the safety of his kind,

And I, on the other side was in the same bind.

Yet as this war goes on and we dragons slay more,

I can’t help but wonder, how many of us will loose sight of what we’re fighting for?
