Chapter Eight: Birthday Cake, Cocktails and Babysitting?
Out of all the 13 places on her bucket list May envisioned herself visiting someday, however the number one Penthouse in Sydney was not one of them. But that's exactly where she was that Saturday evening with Kaida and Vera.
It was Vera's 21st birthday and as far as family traditions ran in her family, it meant that her mom would splurge on a lavish banquet for their closest family and business friends. Vera usually attended these banquets on her own as they were originally hosted in her hometown of Seoul, Korea. But this year it was held in the town as per wishes.
Kaida and May had practically emptied their bank accounts trying to buy the best dress to wear on this special night for their best friend. Unlike Kaida and May, Vera had grown accustomed to her wealthy life. She carried the aura of the wealthy wherever she went but with great modesty and meekness.
Vera was the silent and humble princess.
"When is she going to come down? I am dying for a drink" Kaida whined next May as they waited on the velvet sofas near the staircase.
"You're a cheap drunk, just wait till the party actually starts then we can have a drink" May snapped back at her before going back to admire the lavishly put-together apartment that was before my eyes.
The staircase was glass and swirled into a silver banister that ran along the edges of the second-floor view. There were high glass walls encircling the place that made it look infinitely longer than it was with a magnificent view of Sydney harbor in the background.
The crystal-diamond-like chandelier twinkled and reflected along the walls that made the place look ethereal in the evening. The floors were grey and black marble with a few paintings and book displays around the main area. There was a bar near the front that looked out towards the view and on the veranda was a 20-meter infinity pool.
There were tables of food set up on the other end of the room with serves attending to them. I peeped around earlier and it looked like sushi, caviar, seafood buffet, fruit, some fancy pastry I can't pronounce, and of course the large ten-tier birthday cake. It had big fat letters that blurted out VERA in a pretty girly font.
I was jealous. Vera was living my ultimate princess life.
"If I wait any longer, this dress will become one with my skin," Kaida mumbled to no one in particular which earned a burst of laughter from May. Her outburst got a few weird glances from the grown men and women in the room.
May instantly covered her mouth remembering this was a distinguished party and not one of those college frat parties.
"You look gorgeous, just a minute more and I'll let you have the champagne" Kaida's eyes brightened up at the sound of May's words, and sat with her arms crossed watching the massive black clock from across them.
She really did look gorgeous tonight. Kaida wore a silver cocktail dress which was extremely tight but showed off her toned body, had a halter neckline, and a knee-slit. The dress was plain in the dark but under the light, the silk looked elegant and complimented her complexion greatly.
May wore a black Valentino cocktail gown she had hired from this exclusive online shop. It was gorgeous on her. It had a cow-neck line with delicate spaghetti straps which went around her neck and hugged her body in all the right places. She paired it with black pumps from Kaida.
Suddenly, Vera appeared at the top of the stairs beside both her parents and the crowd gathered near the staircase. Soft classical music played in the background as this gorgeous family began to descend the stairs.
