Chapter Twelve: Boy-band-surfer-like-abs
"I hate uni!"
It was Monday morning and I had class. It was Drawing 101 yayy.... with Professor Julian and Hyunjin and....my hangover.
"Oh shit" I cursed to no-one in particular as I tumbled over a small pebble, almost tripping. I paused and rubbed my eyes and massaged my temples. This morning was not working out for me. Why did I let Kaida and Vera convince me into drinking last night? In their defense, they made a pretty good case. Apparently, Uncle Joe's the Mexican place across town had a Sunday special where you got a free cocktail for every set of $2 spicy wings bought. We expected the drinks to be rather sweet than laced heavily with vodka. My mistake.
I shook my head in disappointment and continued my way across campus, only two blocks away from the Art building.
Just as I was about to reach the classroom, I spotted a silver Mercedes swing around the corner followed by a red one. For a second it was like a Fast and Furious movie was unfolding before me.
I stumbled back a little as the silver Mercedes approached the parking lot and slotted into the nearest vacant spot. The driver lowered his window and revealed an enthusiastic Hyunjin. "You coming?" he called out to me.
I had avoided the 'Hyunjin' topic last night with the girls and even ignored his countless texts last night.
H: Why did you leave so suddenly?
H: Can we meet again?
H: Are you coming tonight? To BB.....
H: I can see you're reading my texts...
I flushed from embarrassment. I can't believe I avoided him all weekend and here he was now, trying to re-enact a scene from a movie. I need to pull myself together. I straightened myself and pulled my bag closer to my shoulder and walked over to Hyunjin's car. "Coming where?" I asked shuffling closer to the car.
Before he could answer, the red car pulled up beside Hyunjin's and beeped loudly. The front glass rolled down and out peeped Chris waving his hand. "What's the delay? You know the beach gets crowded around lunch so hurry".
"You're going to the beach today? But we have class!" I shrieked with shocked eyes. Hyunjin who only scoffed and looked away seemed a little too relaxed to be skipping class.
He looked back at me and smirked, "correction" he pauses, "we are going to the beach today. We're skipping class so hurry before Professor Julian sees you." With that I jumped at the thought of Professor Julian watching from her office, probably planning what punishment I was going to receive.
Hyunjin chuckles at the scene of me leaping into his car before starting the engine and backing out of the university.
It's not until we reach the main road that I realize the situation I am in. In Hyunjin's car, alone, in close proximity, and nowhere to run. The silence is deafening and all I hear is Hyunjin's humming as he drives. I clasp my hands together and place them on my lap.
"So...." I decide to break the silence finally, "who's idea was it to visit the beach today?" I look over at Hyunjin who stopped humming and has his full attention on me now.
"I should be the one to ask you that," he says his eyes never leaving the road, "it was your friend Kat or Dan or something like that.."
"You mean Kaida", I quickly cut him off before he makes any more annoying names.
"Yeah that's the one," Hyunjin continues, "she mentioned something about you wanting to go". There was an awkward pause, and I couldn't help but lean closer to hear his next words. "And the guys," he coughs awkwardly, "Chris has never been, can you imagine. That explains his pale-ass skin!"
