Chapter One: Drawing 101

Leaving the Cherry Café, May stepped out onto the street and caught a slight chill from the cold breeze. It was a cold December day with a hint of rain in the air. May shivered sightly at the breeze and shrugged further into her creamy white overcoat. She turned back to the Café to give a small wave to Kaida before leaving.

Kaida's parents owned the Cherry Café, which was the only place near campus that sold quality lattes. Today Kaida was swamped with the crowd that filtered in from the cold December weather. Luckily, she had always set aside a latte and cherry cheesecake for May whenever she had classes on campus and regularly stopped by the Cherry Café.

Today was such a day for May as Winter classes had just begun and if May wanted to graduate in the Fall she needed the extra credit. However, these were not your usual university courses, it was a specific class offered by Professor Julian, the head of the Art Faculty. She had assigned this Winter course to those who needed the extra credit, it was a simple creative drawing course.

That morning May had only packed her sketch pad and drawing tools in their case. She hoped it would be a short introductory class since it was only the start of the Winter Semester. Thankfully, the Winter had only started with a slight change of weather, it hadn't started snowing just yet.

May was dressed entirely in white, from her topcoat to her smart woolen dress underneath, except for her brown leather boots that stopped just short of her knee. Her jet-black hair was brushed neatly and fell down her shoulder toward her waist. She had light make-up on which only accentuated the natural beauty of her hazel brown eyes and long lashes.

Unlike Kaida and Vera who in May's opinion were 'built like models', she was petite and often looked miniature next to her two best friends. Although she was small in size, May remained a beautiful striking figure and as she hurried across the road; many heads turned. But she did not notice those admiring glances, so transfixed she was on her destination.

Unlike May, her two model-like best friends were often complimented on their looks whenever they went places together. May first met Kaida three years ago on their first day of college. May had walked right into Kaida's Global Cuisine Class without realizing she had the wrong room and sat beside Kaida. Kaida realized this and helped May sneak out without attracting too much attention. The two girls had been inseparable since then.

Kaida was of Japanese Origin with her milky skin, striking black hair that fell to her waist, and large facial feature which she inherited. She was slim, tall and everything May wished she had. Kaida often criticized May for degrading her height, saying "her petite figure was proportionate to her built". Kaida majored in French cuisine and was hoping to be accepted to Le Cordon Bleu after graduation.

May was proud of her best friend who had taken the guts to apply to the top cooking school in the world. Kaida had always wanted to study internationally and this was her last chance to pursue this dream before working. Unlike Kaida who was headstrong, independent, and sociable, Vera was the complete opposite. Not only through majors at school but in personality as well.

Vera was also in Arts School like May, however; she was in the music department. Vera was a top pianist in the country and was currently preparing for her audition into Julliard at the end of Winter. Vera was soft-hearted, caring, sweet, and bright. Unlike Kaida and May, Vera's family were wealthy through their large hotel empire of which she was to inherit someday.

Vera had a darker complexion than the other best friends of which she had inherited from her Italian heritage. She had beautiful wavy dark locks and was just as tall and striking as Kaida. Vera was supposed to begin and finish her studies in Europe however, she chose to begin her piano career locally and make a name for herself. She had accomplished her goal in two years and by her third year in college, she was considered a national name.
