It’s A Shakespeare Thing

Chapter 26

Raylin

“Never once in my life out of my three children did I think you would disappoint me.” Mom crossed her arms and shook her head at me.

“Look, I know it isn’t what you wanted to hear from me. But I feel that what I am doing is right.” I tried to explain. Mom just could not understand why I was giving up on my college education to help Asher raise Braxton.

“How do you know this is right? I mean six months down the road you guys could split up. Then where would you be?” Mom questioned.

“I know this, but I love him and Braxton. Plus, I can always go back to school if I wanted to.” I answered.

“That’s just it. If you wanted to. I know you Raylin. You’re not going to finish college, are you?” Mom shook her head again.

“I probably won’t finish. I love caring for Braxton. If I could do one job and love it, it would be caring for a child. I love watching him grow and learn. I get an overwhelming sense of pride and accomplishment knowing that I’m the one who is helping him learn all these new things.” I tell her in a last ditch effort to get her to understand.

“Ok, I don’t agree with what you are doing, but I will admit that you are wonderful with children. You always have looked after your brothers.” Mom smiled and I knew we were ok.

“I think I hear Braxton. It is about time for him to be waking up from his nap.” I walk into the nursery and Braxton is looking up at his mobile cooing and smiling.

“Hey sweet boy. Did you have a good nap?” I pick him up and he just smiles at me. With each smile this precious little boy gives me my heart melts a little.

“I’m going to go. Your father and Cassio will be dying of starvation if I don’t get home and cook dinner.” Mom joked.

“Speaking of Cassio, how has his behavior been? I asked curiously.

“No more fights thank God, but he is still his mischievous self.” Mom smiled.

“Of course he is. I’ll call you later Mom. Love you.”

“Love you too sweetie. Just so you know, you are still my favorite child.” Mom laughed.

“Hey! I thought you weren’t supposed to have favorites amongst your children.

“Shhh! It’s a secret. Bye honey.” I smiled as Mom walked away before closing the door. I needed to start on mine and Asher’s dinner too.

Braxton had been fed and was sitting contentedly in his high chair playing with a toy when Asher came in. I felt his arms go around my waist and turned my head so he could kiss me. Braxton cooed loudly so Asher released me and picked him up.

“Hey buddy! How was your day?” He asked and Brax just blew spit bubbles at him. Asher sat him back down and looked at me.

“I love this.” He said.

“What?’ I asked cocking my head to the side.

“Coming home to you and Braxton like this each day.” Asher replied.

“I love being here, and I love you.” I kissed him on the cheek as I set a plate of food down in front of him.

“I love you. How did your Mom take your news?” Asher asked giving me a concerned look.

“Not so great. She really wants me to finish school. I think I may have gotten her to understand why I can’t though.” I replied as I sat down across from him.
