CHAPTER 6
FIRST MEETING

LUISA ROMERO HAD FIRST MET TORREY at Polly's wedding reception. Yes, the very day the disaster that was Luisa's wedding toast happened.

Meeting someone like Torrey on that disastrous occasion was pretty much the last thing, no, the most unexpected thing on Luisa's mind.

She had been an outright mess, for starters, and blurted out her long hidden feelings for her best friend who was the one actually getting married that day. To be honest, Luisa didn't know why she had done what she did. There had been so many instances over the years as she grew up when she could have confessed her feelings, but she hadn't. And she had to choose the one day when she was supposed to keep her lips tightly sealed, to reveal her feelings.

As the maid of honour, Luisa was supposed to be the one to make sure that everything went smoothly in her best friend's wedding and reception. But instead, she had taken it upon herself to ruin the day.

She knew she shouldn't have brought along her flask filled with vodka. She knew she shouldn't have picked up a glass of champagne every time a busboy happened to pass by her. She was a lightweight, she knew that, and yet she continued to drink.

Anyways the whole spectacle that was her wedding toast happened—which really wasn't her fault, she would argue, because since when was being honest a crime. She had made herself scarce once she realised what she had done. She didn't look at any one of the guests' faces at the reception and definitely not the bride's, her eyes had been too filled with tears for her to see anything clearly in the first place, and she was more focused on getting out.

Luisa had only made it as far as the corridor of the reception hall when she felt all her stomach's contents move around in a very unsettling way, before they made their way up. Fortunately there was a flower pot nearby—well fortunately for Luisa, but unfortunately for the plant—and Luisa emptied her stomach's contents there.

At least no one's here to witness this additional embarrassment, Luisa thought consolingly, but of course it didn't last long.

"Hey," she heard someone from behind her, "You okay?"

"Oh, for fuck's sake," Luisa groaned to herself, before turning around.

She expected it to be someone she knew, probably one of her other friends, to come and tear her a new one, lash out at her, yell at her, ask her how she could do this, especially to Polly, after everything that she had done for her.

But it hadn't been them, or anyone she recognised for the matter. This was someone new, someone Luisa had never seen before.

And for a moment, Luisa wondered how could she have never seen this woman before. She had such a attention-demanding presence, not only because of her incomparable appearance, but also there was just something striking about her, even though under the poor lighting of the corridor.

She took a few steps closer to Luisa—this time she was able to see her better, and Luisa was proved right there was just really something eye-catching about this woman. She had straight black hair that barely reached her shoulders. Her bare shoulders, Luisa took in, which were fully visible as she was wearing a strapless fitted green dress that perfectly complimented her light brown skin.
