Sitting in yet another plain conference room, Freema looks around as she spins in the chair. She isn't sure why she's even here.
Another medical show on tv?
Another character with just a linear background.
True, since Sense8 wrapped up, she's been lacking a muse and reason to get excited- but a medical show? Isn't there more than enough?
Grey's Anatomy.
The Good Doctor.
House reruns.
Blah blah blah.
They're all the same. So why is she sitting here? She already read for the role of Lauren Bloom- an ED doctor that was outrageously domineering and spunky.
But they called her in today to read for someone else.
"Ah! Freema! Nice to have you back. How was your flight? Not too long I hope." Dave Schulner says as he and a few of his writers and other important colleagues come in.
"Not at'll. It was quite relaxing. How is everyone?" She asks politely with a smile. She enjoys this group of people. They're friendly and caring- their verbiage in their practice script is excellent. But the selling point—she isn't sure she she's the appeal.
"We're splendid- thank you. So we want you to read for a new character. The writers were up for quite a few days picking their brains for someone to put you with."
"What do you mean?" She asks. It confuses her. Was this character not originally in the script? Most times little add on characters flake off after a few episodes. Popularity isn't usually high with them and there for they end up being wrote off before the season is through.
"We loved your read for Lauren." Denise- one of the main writers comments. "But we don't really see you as Lauren."
"We want you for the show! We want you to know that! We love your energy and your personality- we think it'll work great with our other characters. Our Max in particular we think will really benefit from your over all presence and type of acting style." Dave cuts in.
"Linear." Freema states plainly. She hates being thought of as one thing. It's why she chose to be in Sense8. She wanted to prove she was more than just another British Actor playing the supporting role, with barely any lines or character substance. Aminita was a dream- much like Martha Jones.
"NO! By no means is your style linear! We were going back and forth with a character thought- unsure if we wanted her in the show or not because though her position is necessary to the story- we were unsure if the character should be make or female based on the direction we wanna go. Having you read for Lauren- we want you to make this character your own. We see the potential you can bring to this show and the character itself." Handing her a small packet of lines- he smiles slightly as she looks it over.
"Dr. Helen Sharpe? Head of Oncology and Hematology? She's a cancer doctor?"
"Yes. The Head of a whole department."
"What's she like?" Freema usually has a bit of background. A bit of insight on how the characters act or who they are. This is just a name and some lines.
"She's whoever you wanna make her. Would you read for us?" Denise smiles promptly and Freema glances down at some lines. She begins with her American accent- it is an American show after all. Taking place in New York- so it would only be right that Dr. Helen Sharpe is American. "Whenever you're ready."
