Boran Alp P.O.V
Goktug and I are hanging out at Davut Bey's iron shop. Goktug sharpens his dagger on the wheel while I sharpen my sword, making sure it looked even. "Selam Aleykum," Turhan alp greets as he enters the area, "Wa Aleykum Selam." Davut Bey and I reply, I glance at Goktug who keeps sharpening his dagger.
"I have good news, some of my friends from Germiyan lands are coming with their families to fight under Osman Bey." Turhan Alp says excitedly and Davut Bey pats his shoulder, "Masha Allah." I slide my sword into its sheath and stand up, "So our cause grows, kardesh?" I say, putting a hand on his shoulder, and he nods happily. "But, know it's not easy to be Osman Bey's alp, our duties are not the same as others," Goktug says in a rather cold tone.
I shoot him a look, and Goktug ignores me as he walks off. "What did I do to Goktug to deserve this attitude?" Turhan asks, and Davut Bey just chuckles, "I'll talk to him." I say, following behind Goktug.
"Goktug!" I catch up to him, "Why are you doing this?" Goktug turns around, "How can you trust these people so easily? Remember, there was a spy among the refugees as well." Goktug tries to walk off again, but I grab his arm, making him turn to me sharply. "You think I don't care about Osman Bey's safety?" Goktug yanks his arm out of my grip, "Go talk to your Turhan kardesh." He walks off again, and I roll my eyes. I think against going after him since I feel like he'll punch me if I do.
Osman Bey had to go to Konya and the Sultan gave some good news. It's time for war. The Byzantines have refused to pay tax to Seljuk, and the Sultan will command an army himself against them. We stop in a forest, stopping for our horses to rest before going back to the tribe. I grab my bottle of water and go sit next to Goktug. "Goktug," I say, holding the water to him. He glances at me and turns away, "Come on, Goktug, just take it."
Goktug gets up, walking away from me and I sigh, 'Why is he making this so complicated?' Osman Bey calls Goktug as he walks away, then Saltuk rides into the clearing. "Bey'm, Mongols have been spotted, following us. They're crowded." Osman Bey nods as he continues calmly eating his apple. "Boran, Take a couple of alps and hide in the bushes. You will fire arrows once they attack." I nod, and Osman Bey continues, "Goktug, you stay here, let them get close."
The Mongols ride up to Osman who continues calmly sitting and eating. "Did Yargucu send you?" Osman asks, smirking to himself, "Kneel, Osman." Osman takes a bite of his apple, sassily resting his arm on his knee, "Did Yargucu tell you to say that? Did he say Osman will listen when you tell him to kneel?"
The commander draws his sword, "I said kneel, Osman!" Osman gets up, "I would protect your knees if I were you," The commander yell out in frustration. "Attack! Kill them all!" I draw my arrow, "Alplar! Fire!" I take aim and let go, rapidly firing arrows at the Mongol soldiers. I pull my bow over my head and draw my sword, running into the battle.
As I pull my sword out of the soldier's body, I spot Goktug fighting 3 soldier at once, oblivious to the 4th one running to attack him from behind. I grab my bow and draw an arrow, "Goktug!" I fire, letting my arrow embed itself into the soldier's body. As Goktug turns and look at me, another soldier comes up behind him. I draw another arrow and fire again, killing the attacker.
"You were a little late on that one, Boran!" I laugh, "I'll do better next time!" We finish fighting the soldier and walk over to where Osman has the commander on his knees. "Spare my life, Osman Bey!" The man cries and I smirk, 'So much for killing us all.'
Osman walk around him, "If Yargucu came here, If Geyhatu came here, Even if Genghis Khan himself came out of his grave, no one will make Kara Osman kneel." Osman says, using his old nickname. Osman swings his sword slicing a clean cut to his throat.
Much, much later that day after we ate our meal with Cerkutay, and gave Goktug something to think about. Goktug and I were talking in my tent, but it's more like I'm talking and Goktug is pretending to listen.
"Goktug, what's wrong?" I ask and Goktug looks up, "Nothing, I'm fine." I shake my head, "There is something wrong. Something you're not telling me." Goktug sighs, and pulls out a red scarf, "I bought this is Konya, for Zoye." I nod, resisting the urge to make a stupid joke. "But I couldn't give it to her."
"I want to give it to her tomorrow, before we go to fight." I smirk, "But, you're not brave enough, right?" Goktug rolls his eyes, "Boran, you know I can army alone, but when it comes to this... I don't know what to do." I nod, understanding, "You shouldn't leave things half-finished Goktug, go and tell her."
Goktug sighs, "But how am I going to tell her, Kardesh?" "I don't know, Goktug, do want me to go tell her for you? What do you want from me?" I say exasperated, but secretly amused. Goktug rolls his eyes, "Can I ask you something if you won't get mad?" "Go ahead," I tell him, and he scoots closer to me. "How did you confess your feelings for Gonca hatun?"
I laugh, wincing a little, "Um, I almost died doing so. I don't think that example is very helpful. But, tell me this, does she love you?" Goktug looks away, "I'm not sure, but when I look into her eyes... I get lost, I forget how to speak, Kardesh." He says helplessly and I smile, familiar with the feeling.
"Listen, Kardesh'm, If she really loves you, she'll understand the words your heart speaks, even when you don't say them with your tongue. Goktug, just confront her, tell her what your heart says." I tell him, putting a hand to his shoulder, and he nods. "Eyvallah, Boran, Eyvallah." Gonca enters the tent, carrying the jug of water. Goktug shoves the scarf back into his clothes and I bite my lip to stifle my laughter.
Goktug wishes us a quick good night before leaving and I chuckle. "What's up with Goktug?" Gonca asks, "He's desperate, he's fallen in love." I say and Gonca laughs, "And the world hasn't ended?"
