"QUICK," TIANA BECKONED us over.
The three of us stood in the gym, outside the boys' locker room. Our gym had recently been done up. Red and blue walls covered the majority of it while the whole west wall was paned with glass from ceiling to floor.
Unfortunately for us, the locker rooms were opposite the glass. So if anybody saw us through it as they passed by, we would be busted faster than a bullet could leave a gun.
"Let's just grab all the clothes and run," Tiana whispered not so quietly as we pushed through the heavy white door labelled BOYS.
My heart sped up in my chest and it felt as if my pulse would jump out of my skin at any moment. In my entire life - including the parts where I was in and out of hospital - I have never been one to break rules, pull silly jokes or pranks on others. I had always deemed it an act of unlawful vengeance, and that went against everything that I was brought up to be.
Despite the fact that I was nervous as hell, a little bit of adrenaline coursed through my blood. What better time to try new things than now?"Instead of running can we like, fast walk and veer off in mysterious pathways? Practically tricking them into thinking we went one way when we actually went another?"
Another part of having CHD means avoiding strenuous exercise. So I've never been able to ride my bike for very long, run around the playground with other kids in fourth grade let alone join the track team, hockey or basketball team. Not that I'd like to, but the option would've been good enough."Oh, yeah. Sorry, River." Tiana's smile slipped, I knew that look, though it came seldomly. A pang of guilt hit my chest. Tiana and Toby have always had to tone down the fun for me, especially when exercise was involved.
Toby weaved through some wooden benches and over to a set of lockers. "I like Rivers idea more, that way we can act as spies or ninjas."
He made me smile. "Yes Agent Miller," I replied in a deep voice and he laughed.
Baseball tryouts had finished five minutes ago, leaving us three the perfect window to grab the boys clothes while they were taking a shower.
"I'll take these lockers," Tiana begins opening a section of lockers, piling clothes over her arm. Toby and I do the same.
We managed to get a majority of the boys' clothes in a matter of seconds, adrenaline still flushed my blood and I grinned over at Tiana. It was as if I were living the scene from High School Musical.
The shower room door at the back of the locker room creaks open and Derek Matthews walks out. We freeze when we see him.
He looks at us also frozen in spot, his curls cling to his forehead and beads of water drip from his tanned skin. My cheeks turn beet red when I look down and realise he's half-naked, a plain white towel covering... well, you know what.
Derek glances from our faces to the clothes in our hands. He unfreezes and chuckles knowingly as he walks over to his locker. "Don't mind me," he said. The three of us shrug a glance at each other before rushing toward the door we came in. The image of him half-naked will not erase itself from my mind, I hold my breath remembering how muscled his top half was. I bring a hand up to my cheek and feel the burning heat still there.
Toby closes the door behind us and we scout the gym floor for which route to take. "Fast walk out the front door and risk being seen? Or out the back through the gym office?" Toby whispered rapidly.
A rumbling growl came from the boy's locker room. "RIVER!" Derek shouted in vehement. My eyes grow wide and Toby glances at the clothes in my hand. I look down and sure enough, wrapped in the bundle of boy's clothes is Derek's black hoodie and sweatpants.
"I think out the back," I said and we hurried toward the gym office in the fastest walk we could all muster.
Over my shoulder I see Derek storm out of the locker room. He looks around for us a furious expression on his perfect features. "When I said don't mind me I meant continue taking the others clothes not mine!"Tiana, Toby and I can't help but laugh as we rush through the blue gym office door and out the back to the field. "Did you see how ridiculous he looked in just his towel?" Tiana bends over from laughing so hard.
"His face was so red," Toby grins. He looked almost pleased with having been part of the cause that made Derek flustered and mad. Toby is many things, but pleasure from prank madness? They barely know each other, and it had me thinking about the encounter at the lockers this morning.
Eventually, we cross the field to the tennis and basketball courts outside. Toby begins strewing the clothes over the nets and wired gates. It looked like a stripper club came and partied at school. If Principal Newman saw this his head would for sure explode.
"Oh shoot, here they come." Tiana points at the gym.All the baseball boys come running out of the glass gym door, holding their towels together with one hand. What a sight this was. Students in the lunch blocks surrounding us had their faces pressed up against the windows and the outside eaters stood gawking with their phones at hand, recording the whole show.
Derek leads the pack, several metres ahead. He did look hot, I have to admit that. Beside me, I could see that Tiana was thinking the same thing even though his fiery gaze was set solely on me."Guys," I turned to them. "I think we should run." I know for a fact the outcome would not be great for my heart if I ran from this, but flight mode kicked in before I could mull this over logically.
