COACH COULDN'T MAKE the trials in the end, so he trusted Toby as the team captain, to pick the two best players to run by him next week.
"So who are you going to pick?" I walked behind Toby as he stacked the gear and cones into the back of Rex's truck. "Derek and Eli are really good. They made a good team," I added my opinion. "That other guy, Vincent with the blonde hair? He was pretty sloppy."
I looked back to the field where all the boys were slinging their soccer shoes over their shoulders and dunking the last of their water over their heads to cool off in the heat.
Derek's eyes met mine as he pushed his wet curls off his forehead. He grinned at me.
I waved hesitantly, feeling embarrassed at being caught staring then turned away blushing. I can not believe he read my ridiculous bucket list. God, why did I have to write my first kiss on it!
Toby turns around abruptly. "Just because Derek's you're little boyfriend doesn't mean he automatically gets recommended to coach," he grunted.
My mouth went slack, I took a step away from the truck, taken aback at his fury.
"First of all, Derek is not my 'little boyfriend'." I hoisted my bag further over my shoulder and crossed my arms. "Second, I was just saying my opinion and that doesn't mean you have to pick him."
Toby turned his back to me and climbed out of the truck while ignoring everything I was saying.
He always used to value my opinion, what happened?
I raised my eyebrows. "And third, what is your problem? You've been acting weird throughout the whole of try outs."
"Woah, what's going on here?" Rex said as he made his way over to us.
Toby mumbled something under his breath and turned away with a quick glance at me through his thick lashes.
Rex raised his eyebrows at the both of us.
Sighing I said, "I'm heading home. You coming Toby?"
"Yeah," he replied blandly and started off toward my car.
A small crease formed in Rex's forehead as he watched his friend haul my car door open and sit in the passenger seat. "What did you do?" Rex asked me.
"Me? What did I do?" I exclaimed. How on earth could I have done something!
"Yeah," he frowned.
"I didn't do anything!" I huffed and made my way over to my car.
Neither of us talked for the first five sets of lights.
The silence was chilling, it felt unnatural. There's always something we have to talk about, from the latest movie to a weird outfit a teacher wore to class. For once, it felt awkward. For once, I wished he wasn't right next to me.
"He's not good enough River."
I looked over at him, surprised that he cut the thread of silence. "What?"
"Derek," Toby clarified. "He's not good enough for the team."
I knew Toby well enough to know that was bullshit. That he's hiding the real truth of why he doesn't want Derek on the team.
"Why not? He was the best out there."
"Did you even watch anyone else? Because I know for a fact you were staring at him and only him."
A small blush creeped across my checks. I couldn't deny that I wasn't watching Derek but I didn't want to agree that I was either. So I kept silent.
Parking my car in the driveway, we got out of the car and he followed me up to my room in quietly.
Opening the door, there lying on my bed, scrolling through her phone was Tiana. "Hey friends-" she stopped.
"Y'all seem tense."
I flopped onto the bed next to her. "Not me. Him," I jerked my finger over to Toby who took a seat on my desk chair.
He gave me a look. "Hey, I didn't do anything," he defended himself.
"Yeah. Sure," I mumbled only for myself to hear. Though I'm sure Tiana caught the last word.
"Okay, when I'm around whatever shit happened between you guys has to just-" She brought her hands up and flung them sideways. "fly away."
Toby and I glanced at each other. His blonde hair fell across his green eyes and he pushed it away with his hand.
Tiana grinned. "I recommend a kiss and make up."
My eyes widened and I grabbed a pillow from below my headboard. Then I whacked her with it in hopes whatever dirty minded thing she was thinking would get whacked out with it.
Toby stood up. "I like that idea," his grin matched Tiana's.
"No! No you will not kiss me." I scrambled up off the bed as he proceeded to walk over to me.
Tiana started cheering him on as he chased me around my bedroom. "No! Toby!" I screamed, wheezing a little and went to hide behind my desk chair.
"I know you want it," he made kissing sounds.
I pushed the chair towards him, the wheels squeaking against the floor. He dodged it and grabbed my hips from behind, pulling me back into him.
"Toby," I squealed, his touch tickling my waist as I tried to get out of his grasp.
He swivelled me around in his arms. "Kiss and make up, River." His eyes travelled down to my lips.
A/N: totally did not just do that to y'all.
Sorry for a shorter chapter, @MissyBookie really wanted an update.
Also as usual I got another book in mind, so this book won't get as much focus unless y'all keep commenting or messaging me for me to specifically post more chapters for this.
Though cause I left y'all on a cliff hanger I might get the next chapter up faster. Though will probably also be short... if u don't mind
