ANNOYINGLY, PHYSICS WASNT at its best today not to mention I was put to sleep halfway through our film analysis for English. So I'm god damn hoping that Geography isn't any worse.

The corridor buzzed with noise, students twisting this way and that as they made their way to the fourth period.

Occasionally few would bump into me as they rushed past to greet friends. I've always imagined what it would be like to have fifty or so friends, always chatting away to someone in the corridor. I've only ever had Tiana and Toby. Don't get me wrong here, I'm a confident person, if I wanted to I probably could but I just try not to get attached. That'd mean more people at a loss when I leave.

The geography door was flung wide open in front of me as a girl and her boyfriend headed inside. I followed behind them, watching as his hand slid into her grasp. I've never had a boyfriend either and I doubt it'd happen anytime soon.

I drop into my seat with a sigh. I need to stop thinking like that. There are thirty days left for me to enjoy, so I might as well try.

"Good day class," Ms. Simmons sang out while she dropped her notes on the desk.

Ms. Simmons was somewhat different from the other teachers. She always wore a bright scarf that wrapped around her curly dark hair, which was practically the full length of her entire body.

You wouldn't expect her to have worked in a school environment for over thirty years, there wasn't a single wrinkle on her face.

"How is everyone's day so far?" She smiled cheerily. And she's always in such a good mood.

No one replies to her question. "Never mind then," she said.

I sunk into my seat and rested my head in my hand as she began talking about our new assignment.

'World Child Poverty.'  Ms. Simmons wrote on the freshly cleaned board. The faint smell of isopropyl alcohol and whiteboard pen tickling my nose.

"This assignment will be due in a few days, you will have class time to complete it. I'd prefer you not to do it outside of school." She took a short pause to smile. "Any questions?"

My eyebrows draw together as I hold in a laugh. Her mind always wanders off on her, she thinks she's said one thing but has completely skipped it. "What is the assignment? Other than the title of course."

A couple of kids around me let out a laugh, all of them thinking the same thing.

"Oh! Right," Ms. Simmons laughs and picks up a box. "Choose a partner and-"

The door creaking open interrupts her mid-sentence. Derek pokes his head through the gap. "Is this Ms. Simmons Geography class?" He asks.

Ms. Simmons smiles. "It sure is."

Derek lets out a relieved sigh before opening the door fully. "Thank god. I thought I'd be walking around this school for hours before I'd find it."

All the girls seem to lean forward at the sight of him. I even feel myself drawing closer, that is until I shake myself out of it.

"I'm Derek Matthews by the way." He held out a hand to Ms. Simmons a pearly white grin on that handsome face of his.

"Well, if you'd like to take a seat, Derek, I was just beginning on explaining our new assignment."

Derek moved down the rows of seats. He moved the way honest people do, with the spark of the child and a smile that went all the way through to his core. When his gaze landed on me, I looked away to grab out my drink bottle.

"Hey," he whispered.

I gave him a small smile that silently replied before taking a swig of my water.

He took a seat next to me. "I'm glad there's at least someone I know in one of my classes."

Chucking my bottle back near my feet I turn to him. "I feel honoured."

Ms. Simmons adjusts her floral skirt then continues on with her short explanation of the assignment. "In pairs, you will research child poverty in a random country." She holds up a blue ice cream container and shakes the paper in it around. "Who wants to pick first?"

Two girls at the front of the class get up to pick.

"Partners?" Derek looks over at me with raised eyebrows.

From a small glance around the class. I'd say there were at least ten people who wanted to partner up with Derek. The majority of them being girls.

To be honest, I actually want to partner up with him so I say, "As long as I'm not the only one doing the work."

He grins. "Sweet."

"River," Ms. Simmons called. "Your turn." She gestures toward the container with the various countries inside.

"Pick a good one," Derek said to me as I got up.

Approaching the box, Ms. Simmons holds it higher so I can't cheat my way to choosing my country. I dip my hand in and pull out a folded white piece of paper.

"New Zealand." I read aloud.

From the back of the class, Derek scrunched up his face. "Where the fuck is New Zealand?"

Ms. Simmons bright smile turned into a frown. "Watch your language, Derek."

He waves her off and I head back to my seat.

"Next time, I'm choosing from the box," His lower lip protruded in a sulky pout.

I throw the paper at him jokingly. "You still better do the work."

His pout lifted back into its usual grin. "Yeah, yeah I will and you better stay my partner."

A/N: I've been too lazy to write in my free time soz but I'll try get this up n running
