TIANA AND I lay on my bed together, our feet at the pillows and our faces at the end.
Propping up my elbows, I rested my head in my hands and looked up at Toby who was spinning around in my desk chair. "How was soccer practice?"
He groaned and ran a hand through his blonde hair.
Toby is the captain of the boy's soccer team at our school, Carson High. Despite his role, he's already well known throughout the school for his charming looks and sweet personality. So being the soccer captain only feeds to his popularity, whereas Tiana and I are just the 'usuals.' We don't fit into any cliche group, we're neither popular nor the quiet loners, we're just us.
"Two guys dropped out, they couldn't handle the drills or coach's hardass yelling."
My eyebrows raise. "Couldn't handle it? Then why the hell are they in the soccer team?"
"I know right," Toby replies. "Bunch of wussy's."
"What are you going to do now?" Tiana asks, propping her elbows up like mine.
He shrugs. "Find two other players."
"Well no duh." Tiana giggles. Toby grabs a sock off my floor and throws it at her. She squeals and rolls over toward the edge of the bed to dodge it.
"Anyways, So what's going on with you River? You seem a bit... sad, and... out of it today."
Tiana twisted onto her side and examined me. "Anything new to report from Dr. Winton?"
Ever since they got here, I've been avoiding the topic. How can you tell your best friends you've got a month to live?
I fiddle with the edge of the duvet cover, contemplating whether or not to tell them.
Peeking up at my best friends through my eyelashes, I realize that I should tell them straight up. They deserve to know.
I took a deep breath before I told them. "I've got a month left."
Together they became more alert, their eyes widening. For a few seconds they tried to process this, then without saying a word, Toby rose from his chair, and Tiana and him both enveloped me in a ginormous bear hug.
My throat grew tight, and my eyes began to water. "I don't want to leave you guys, or mum and dad," I whispered hoarsely.
The warmth of the hug spread through my body.
"I can't believe this is actually happening," Toby said, his voice cracking.
"Who's gonna help me keep this dipshit in line?" Tiana cried, gesturing at Toby.
