Gray saw a light, this bright, white light shining on him. It was warm, and inviting, but foreign to him. This was not Scotland. He should not be here.
Was he dead? Was he seeing the gates of Heaven?
No, it was the sun rays through a hospital window.
His eyes blinked open, trying to adjust to the light. He was in a white hospital shirt, with a few bandages around his chest. A couple cords attached to machines taking his temperature and heartbeat, making sure he was functioning correctly. He was tired, but fully awake at the same time. He could faintly remember blacking out from exhaustion after... after...
The door clicked open, and a tall woman dressed smartly in a gray suit and purple shirt entered his hospital room. He gave a weak smile, though his mouth was tight. His lips were cracked. Still, he decided that since the Chief had gone through all the trouble to see him— he had to at least put in an effort to be conversational. "Well, well, could it be the real you?" He asked.
Chief smiled. "It's all real, Hawkins. The hospital stay and the accident that landed you here."
"No, there was no accident... I was doing something very deliberate. It's right on the tip of my tongue..." he said. "I didn't lose my memory again, did I?"
"The doctor said you might still be in shock, and haven't fully registered the events that took place, yet. But it is expected that you will recall the details of our operation overtime," Chief explained. "I wouldn't worry. Not about that, anyway. But there's a long line of people who have a few choice words for you. Now that you should worry about. And it starts with Faculty Member Bocaiúva."
Faculty Member Bocaiúva. That didn't sound right. There was an Ono and a Headroom, but no Bocaiúva. That was Felix and Lucianna's last name. Wait, right! That's why he was in this hospital bed, he and Carmen had charged into V.I.L.E. Castle right before it was about to explode, to rescue a machine that might've restored his memories. They got out, but not far enough away before the structure blew. But if he was alive, it meant he had succeeded. That the risk was worth it, further reinforcing that he had done the right thing.
"So Felix got his memory back," Gray asked, smiling.
"And a promotion along with it. One of my two vacant faculty member positions had to be filled, and following recent events, I've added him to the roster. He took Hayashi Ono's old spot, leaving just Rodger's fo be filled"
Rodger. Gray scowled with distaste. Things could've gone so much more smoothly if it weren't for him.
"Overall, was the operation a success?" Gray asked, "Was anyone hurt?"
"The invasion was a total success, and more than we could've hoped for. A couple agents got knocked out, and there was a series of scrapes and bruises. Not one agent fractured any bones, and you were the only one at risk of death. But you didn't die. Obviously, as you can see you made it out fine," Chief answered.
It came out much weaker and sensitive than he hoped, but Gray couldn't help but ask, "And Carmen?"
"A little burnt from riding a flaming glider, but relatively alright. She has made a full recovery and was discharged weeks ago," Chief replied.
"Where'd she go? Is she here too?" He asked, a little too hopefully.
"She's in Buenos Aries, Argentina, with her mother," Chief said, taking a seat at the end of his hospital bed.
Gray did his best to mask his disappointment. He whistled. "Buenos Aires, Argentina, wow."
"She asked to pass along her contact information, and requested you provide yours... assuming it wouldn't complicate anything," Chief said.
