"And you just... let him believe that?" Carmen gasped, outraged after Shadowsan recounted his argument with Agent Gray.
"It was to respect your wishes, to not tell him the truth about V.I.L.E. However, as he put the false pieces together, the puzzle became obstructed. I did not know what to say," Shadowsan replied solemnly.
Carmen slumped. "The truth is sounding mighty good right now. At least better than this alternative."
"I'm sorry, Carmen," Shadowsan sighed.
She shook her head.
She had to admit she was surprised when Gray didn't acknowledge her on the sidewalk bench. Of course it all made sense now, but at first she thought maybe it was because he was with a group of people, including that one agent who had become one of Paper Star's victims. But he had clearly saw her, looked her straight in the eye.... and then just ignored her. She hated to sound vain, but between V.I.L.E. and ACME always on her tail, Carmen wasn't very used to being ignored. Especially when she presented herself out in the open the way she did.
She usually wouldn't have minded being treated like a normal civilian or tourists, but this time? This one time she didn't want to be just another commuter. She had wanted to catch up again after the two and a half months she and Gray had been apart.
She'd seen plenty of Devineaux, Zari, Chief, and all the other normal, boring agent faces. But no Gray, which was strange after the whole "Carmen San Diego Surveillance Squad" thing. She'd been sort of hoping to see him again.
And the one time in months that she did? He didn't want to see her.
Her luck was really cruddy like that.
"Look, it's fine. I'll be fine. In fact, I am fine," Carmen said, honestly trying to convince herself more than her team. Neither attempt was very successful, however.
"You sure, Carm?" Ivy asked, still very concerned.
"Yes. Definitely. Let's just... forget about Gray for a moment," she assured them all.
Zack and Player shared a glance, but said nothing.
"What's the Caper, Player?" Carmen asked, to change the subject.
On the other end, Player typed something into his computer. "That's a complicated question, Red. But if all goes well, you'll be grabbing a new artifact called the 'Red Crackle Binyeo' which coincidentally is also being held around your area in South Korea."
Zack winced, "It's seriously called the 'Red Crackle Bingo?' You know, like Red and Crackle—"
"WE KNOW, bro. Shut up," Ivy scolded.
"And it's called a binyeo, Zack," Player reminded him, "It's an ancient Korean hairpiece still rooted deep into the nations culture. Married women would wear them in their hair. Depending on your class in the Korean social hierarchy, the material could vary between gold, to silver, to wood, to even bone."
"Gnarly," Zack noted.
"I have to ask however," Shadowsan interrupted, "There are many ancient binyeos on display in many different places. What makes this one any different?"
"Well, unlike most binyeos, this one had a red gold and glass crackle pattern, hence the name. No one's ever seen anything like it before. It was also just dug up by some new up-start archaeology company at the dig site where they found what is now confirmed to be an old ancient Korean tomb. They think it was worn by a princess, or the wife or daughter of a high ranking Korean general. As of now, it's so valuable to finding out who the tomb belonged to, and to Korean culture that it's not even being revealed exactly where the team is keeping it in their warehouse. For preservation efforts, the team leader only allowed one picture! To the average person, it's almost as if it DOESN'T EXIST."
