Chapter 55: Under Attack?

CATRINA

I gasp in shock at Connor's snarling words. Sierra sits up, pulling away from me after squeezing my hands in gratitude and then turns to look at Connor.

"We don't know if he's with Xanthos. He is a rogue but he might not be evil," whispers Sierra but even to me, her words sound unsure, as if she doesn't want to hurt Connor by talking ill about his father.

The thought of meeting Connor's father in itself is a scary image in my mind. I don't know what he'll say once he sees that we have made the decision of being together, that I'm no longer living apart from Connor.

His father might get angry. What if he manipulates Connor this time? Will he agree with his father?

The thought itself causes a piercing sensation in my chest and I heave in a breath, trying to push away those depressing thoughts out of my mind and focus on the conversation that Sierra and Connor are having.

"Catrina."

I jump in surprise when I see that Connor's standing in front of me instead of sitting on the couch. I look up at him, a question swirling in his eyes as he frowns down at me.

"Ah, what?" I ask. I didn't hear what they were speaking, being too busy with my thoughts.

"Catrina, I think my father's up to something. I'll go to check upon him. If there's a need then I'll call Fenris here," he whispers, pulling me close to rubs my arms.

I nod my head, looking behind Connor to see that Sierra's not sitting anymore, she's walked towards the doorstep and is having a dreamy look on her face. Maybe she's communicating with her mate, I think as I focus back on Connor.

"Okay, but will you be fine?" I ask, not really knowing why but my instincts are telling me that something's going to happen. My stomach churns leaving me scared all of a sudden, not wanting Connor to leave me alone but I resist telling him that.

"I'll be fine, Solnyshko. There are five pups including Selene and the pup we are planning to adopt. You'll have to be with the pups, they'll be calm in your presence," he whispers and I realise that he's trying to distract me so that I don't get scared in his absence.

Pulling on my brave pants, I take a deep breath, knowing that Connor will have to go to sort out the problem at hand in the absence of Fenris. "Yes, okay," I whisper and smile at him but I am sure it looks very unconvincing because Connor pulls me closer to plant a kiss on my head and then squeezes me in his arms.

"There's nothing to fear, baby. If you want to go to Cayden with all the kids, I'll drop you there. I don't know where Christine is. Sierra will have to come with me but I'll send her to the infirmary too, once I find some elder to talk to. Is that okay?" he asks and I nod vigorously to show that I am listening.

"Okay. Can you communicate with Cayden?" I ask, watching Connor frown at my question.

"Yes, why?"

"Please, be in touch with him. I need to know that you are safe," I whisper, my eyes blurring unexpectedly making me feel ashamed for my lack of courage. Connor smiles a bit and then cups my cheeks, kissing me fiercely as if pouring all his love in the kiss, assuring me that he won't go anywhere and will come back to me.

"I'll make sure to keep Cayden awake," he whispers, smirking and an unexpected chuckle leaves me at the thought of Cayden getting irritated because of Connor's updates.

"Catrina."

Connor and I turn to look at Sierra who's now carrying a sleeping Selene in her arms with a bag of what I think are her toys. We both walk towards her, looking at her unsure expression.
