"Ma, look at my hair!"

She smiled turning towards me, one hand going to her waist, the other gripping tightly onto the rolling pin, "It's beautiful! What did you do to it?"

I excitedly rumbled on about this friend I'd made who had braided the ends of my cornrows during the morning assembly and had promised that by the end of the day they would be curly. My mother pulled at one of the ringlets after wiping the flour on her leso and I smiled as I felt it spring back to the nape of my neck.

"Do I know this friend of yours? Who are her parents?" She asked as she continued rolling the pin on the ball of dough.

"I don't think you know them, they just moved here. From Somalia I think."

She nodded attentively like she always did when I told her how my day had been, "That's good. Come with her some time. I would love to meet her."

"Okay mama."

"Now go do your homework and then you can eat."

I laughed scooping a pinch of salt onto my palm before licking it, "I don't have any."

"Go revise then before I beat you with this pin. And eat sugar like normal children!"

I laughed walking out of the kitchen. My ma made threats like that all the time but she had never actually hit me. She wouldn't do that.

I stopped by the mirror to admire my hair again, it almost looked like hers. I wasn't supposed to tell anyone, but she had let me peek into her hijab. Just to show me what my hair would look like. I had laughed because I didn't believe it, her hair was different than mine. She was different.
