12. Say My Name

Later that evening on my way home, I got a call from Paul.

"I don't know where you are but you need to go home right now."

"Why?" I asked, his stern voice spiking worry in me.

"Your mum called my house to ask if you were here. She asked to speak to you and I told her that you had just left."

Honestly I wasn't surprised she'd do that but it still annoyed me nonetheless.

"Thank you, Paul."

I was going to have a talk with her when I got home. The walk back gave me time to cool off otherwise I would have snapped at her.

"Evening, ma," I greeted.

"You're back," she said looking up from her Bible.

Fidgeting, I sat across from her, "Paul said you called."

She looked up again, surprise momentarily taking over her features. "I was worried. It was getting late."

"Do you not trust me?"

She sighed placing her Bible aside.
"It's not that. I worried that you'd go see that girl."

"Zahra," I said quietly.

"Eh?"

"Her name's Zahra. You keep calling her 'that girl'" I said calmly, barely managing to keep my irritation at bay.

She laughed in the way that she did when she was really angry and trying not to show it.

"You better not be seeing that... Zahra girl again, Nadia. Not while you're in this house, I won't allow it," she said failing terribly to maintain her calm as her face immediately hardened.

I nodded. It was best to not argue with her. What was the point any way.
