"We have to pick up my brother." Rodrick informed Mallory.
"Okay, I'm in no rush to go home anyway." She admitted.
The two got into Rodrick's van and drove off. They spent most of the ride in silence.
"Wanna go get snacks before practice?" He asked her.
"Sure." Mallory answered.
Rodrick pulled up in front of a middle school. He got out of the car and grabbed some leaflets from the back.
"Hand these out." He told the girl.
"What are they for?" She questioned him.
"They're gonna get us a new gig." He replied. "Loded Diper's coming to rock a town near you."
Rodrick gave a few students some leaflets. Mallory noticed Greg, his friend Rowley and a blonde girl look at them.
"I think Greg's getting his yearbook signed by that girl." She pointed out.
Rodrick looked at them.
"Aw, you're getting your yearbook signed." He mocked Greg. "That is so cute."
Rodrick snatched the book away from Greg and opened it. He laughed at the page before showing Mallory, she started laughing too.
Greg snatched the book back and looked at it."What the heck?" He questioned.
A car horn honked and distant music was heard. A red car was seen.
"That's Heather Hills." Rodrick marvelled.
A blonde girl looked up from the passenger seat.
"Get in." She demanded the younger blonde that was standing next to Greg.
"But I need to finish signing Greg's yearbook." The girl argued.
"News flash, I don't care." Heather told her.
Mallory rolled her eyes before looking at Rodrick, his eyes were glued to Heather. The younger blonde got into the car. Greg tried to start talking to her before Rodrick interrupted.
"So Heather." He started. "You know I'm going on a world tour with my band."
Mallory gave him an inquisitive look since this was the first she had heard about it.
"If you're around, I could probably comp you chicks some tickets." He offered.
"How come I never knew anything about this 'world tour' Rodrick?" Mallory questioned.
"Let's go." Heather scowled.
The red car pulled away, running over Rodrick's foot.
"Ow." He squealed with pain.
He started jumping in one foot.
"Just trying to act cool." He insisted. "But I know she's into me."
"Sure mate." Mallory put her hand on his shoulder.
Rowley read out what the younger blonde wrote in his yearbook.
"What does it say in yours?" He asked Greg.
"Have a great summer." He read. "You're such a good friend."
Mallory and Rodrick started laughing.
"Friend?" Rodrick questioned.
"Oh. Oh man." Mallory laughed.
"That's the kiss of death." Rodrick joked. "Friends, that's..."
The oldest Heffley trailed off laughing.
Once Rodrick had dropped Greg home, he and Mallory stopped by the nearest gas station.
"Petrol stations in America are so much better than in England." Mallory marvelled.
"They're probably not." Rodrick shrugged.
The two went into the shop. Mallory picked up a Fanta fruit twist and strawberry mentos. The teens put their shopping on the till.
"Is that all you're getting?" Rodrick questioned her.
"Strawberry mentos are my favourite." She answered.
"Okay then." Rodrick sighed and pulled money out of his pocket.
The boy went to pay for Mallory's stuff too before she stopped him.
"I'll pay for my own stuff." She told him. "I hate people paying for me.
