I don’t bother checking my phone for any comments or likes. It has been a week since Ramsies and I ran away and 3 days since I posted a picture of me. It was so unusual to get so many likes, from the first 50 something I saw, then I stopped looking at them. I have to admit it has been fun here with just Ram and me.

It is around midnight and the woods are quiet except a faint owl here and there. Ramsies has been asleep since 9, he has been exhausted ever since we started hiking. We’ve been on the highway for about 4 days now, and poor Ram has been a zombie. He hasn’t complained but I can tell by his posture and facial expressions.

We are sitting on the side of the highway underneath trees, with the moon barely visible through all the leaves. I can’t sleep and come to my senses that I should draw. That always calms my mind. I pull out my drawing pad, luckily barely used, and a pencil with an eraser.

My pencil starts working slowly and diligently across the paper. Work, my mind tells me, don’t sleep, work.It turns out to be an outline of a girl facing sideways her hands up by her neck. It only shows from the breast up to her head, but there is a lot of space in between her head and the top of the paper. I decide to leave that until I can come up with something to put there.

I drew the outline in about 20 minutes. I am physically and mentally exasperated. I come to the conclusion that I need sleep. So I sleep.

The sound of honking wakes me up. It is only 6:38, Ramsies is sitting up rubbing one hand down his face. For once, I don’t want to move, I don’t even want to hike. We pack our things, which is a granola bar wrapper, and start walking along the road. Only a few minutes later a car drives by, but stops up ahead when they realized we were here.

“Hey!” The man driving the vehicle says.

“Hi,” I reply back.

“What are ya’ll doin’ out here in the cold?”He says with a Texas accent even though we live in Nebraska.

“Hitch hiking,” simply says I.

“Aren’t ya’ll a little too young?”

“If you consider being teens then yes.”
“Well how about ya come with me, don’ want ya to freeze.”

“Yes, sir,” I have no clue why he said that its not even 40 degrees, but I’m guessing he did because we are in shorts.

I am wearing a tank with a cute plain but cheap jacket, I bought so I could get it dirty. I have on jean shorts, worn and dirty, along with my hiking boots. Ramsies has on basketball shorts and a tee-shirt with some weird band on it. These clothes he has been wearing for the whole week, thanks to him running after me.

We hop in the back of the man’s pickup truck. It is a fairly nice car and plenty of room. The seats are torn in some places, but otherwise the car is in good repair. Ramsies gives me a quizzical look that I can read by which he means he doesn’t like this idea at all. I reply with “It’s our only chance.”

“Fine.”

“So how did ya’ll end up on the road?” The man asks looking into his rearview mirror so he can see us.

“We had a bad life at home is all,” I reply wanting to do all the talking for us two.

“Oh, well I bet ya glad I picked you up. Ain’t ya?”

“Oh yes sir, very grateful.”

“Not too many nice folks these days in ol’ Nebraska,” he rambles on.

I don’t reply and let him talk more. I end up not paying any attention to him and zoning out into my own dreams. I look outside the window suddenly remembering that I haven’t told him where we want to go.

“Uh, sir,” I politely interrupt him, “Can you take us to downtown?”

“Well I’m sorry but no ma’am. You’re in my boat now, you do as I say,” he says with a wicked grin.

“Oh.”

We arrive at something of a house. I already can tell this isn’t a good idea plus he lives in the middle of nowhere.

“Home sweet home,” he says.

“Um sir, we never got your name,” I stutter.

“Call me Jim,” he replies with a creepy smile.

I get out of the car with Ramsies. I give him a look and mouth to him, “Lets go now.” And like that we are running. The man is screaming bloody murder at us. Ramsies is quicker than me so he bolted into the woods. I am only a few yards behind, but a yank to my jacket drives me backward. I fall like a clux on my butt.

“Ramsies!” I yell.

“Now I’m sorry darlin’ but you ain’t goin’ anywhere.”

Ramsies comes around looking angered, this is the only time I’m glad he has been in many fights. He grabs the man’s arms making him drop me. Without hesitation I run into the woods to where I can see them but they can’t see me. I watch as Ramsies slams him up against a tree and punches the hell out of the guy called Jim. He is bloodied now but Ramsies won’t stop.

“Ram its good come on,” surprisingly he does and runs towards me grabbing my wrist and pulling me with him.

“He will wake up soon and send people out for us, we can’t ever take that road again,” he says as though that’s it.

“Fine, but what road will we take now?”

“The one on the opposite side closer to downtown.”

“Ok,” I puff out.

After about ten minutes in running we finally stop. I don’t know this side of the woods since we went in the opposite direction in the man’s car. I look around at the surroundings. It is close to dark around 7:35, therefore we settled down.

“I’m gonna go to sleep set your watch alarm to 7,” Ramsies explains.

“Yes, I will.”

“Night then.”

“Night,” I reply with a big yawn.

BEEP...BEEP...BEEP

My alarm goes off.

“Wake up,” I yawn at Ram.

“Good morning to you to,” he replies with a tired face.

“Lets walk today, no running, unless we actually have to.”

“I can deal with that.”

“Good. Then lets go,” I say with a nod of my head.

“We shall.”

We start walking. The ground hurts due to many rocks underneath, and then it occurs to me my hiking boots aren’t on! I had taken them off to go to bed. I stop go back for them and put them on, Ramsies had stopped up ahead waiting for me. I get back up from tying my last shoe and we walk again.

“Ram we only have a bar left, we need food.”

“Oh, how can we get some?”

“Do you know how far it is from here to town?”

“Yea J, it’s about 5 miles,” he says with a defeated voice.

“Well looks like we are going to go shoplifting,” I say with a wicked smile.
