Laura's POV

I woke up the next day early again so I had time to make sure I looked good. I tried so hard that I even wore a dress. A DRESS. While I was packing up my backpack for school, I got a text from Hayes.

"Hey come out side! Let's go get breakfast!"

I smiled and quickly ran out the door. I saw Hayes on his phone in his car. I walked over to the car, trying to seem chill and not at all like I was freaking out inside my house. I opened the door and he imitatively put his phone down and smiled.

"Good morning!" He said as I buckle my seat belt.

"Hi! Quick question, why?"

Hayes shrugged. "I woke up early and was hungry, there was nothing to eat, I assumed you didn't want to walk to school so.."

I chuckled and looked at my hands. Hayes smiled at me and pulled out of the driveway. We drove down the road and into town. We grabbed a couple bagels and headed to school. When Hayes parked the car, I noticed him nervously looking around out the window.

"You okay?" I ask.

"Um yeah. I just don't want my friends bothering you again." He said, still somewhat frantically looking around.

"Oh Hayes, they don't bother me! I've dealt with worse." That was a lie. I hated those guys and they were probably some of the rudest people I know.

"Are you sure? It looked like they were annoying you during lunch and class."

"Hayes, it's okay." He looked at me, a little unsure. He shook his head and got out of the car. I followed him and we went into class. We talked a little bit and ate our bagels.

Then, Hayes's friends walked into the class. They were laughing at each other and then spotted Hayes and I. They all stopped and glared at the two of us. I looked over at Hayes and he was glaring right back at them. They all sat down and ignored him.

"Did something happen last night?" I ask. He sighed and looked down at his bagel.

"Kinda..."

"Do you wanna talk about it?" I asked slowly.

"Not really." He said shaking his head. The bell rang and we started class.

***After School***

I decided to walk home. Hayes looked really upset this morning and I didn't want to make it worse. When I get home, I throw all of my stuff on the ground. I saw a note on the counter. It was from my mom and read it. "Hi Laura! I wanted to let you know that I'll be home late tonight. Like around 10 or 11. There is mac and cheese in the fridge for you to eat for dinner. Love you!" I sighed and put the note down. I never liked nights like these. I miss my mom when she works late and just leaves me food to eat. I want to have conversations with her about my day and share stories. It's hard to do that when she works all the tie at this new job of hers.

Then my phone buzzed and I looked and saw I had a text from Hayes.

 "Hey where are you?"

"I'm home."

"You walked?"

"Yeah"

"Why?"

"You seemed upset today and I didn't want to make you feel worse."

"That's ridiculous. You didn't do anything. I just had a bad night at football and my friends are mad."

"I'm sorry."

"It's not your fault."

**Hayes's POV***

Yes it was. I couldn't stop thinking about her and it threw me off. Something about Laura just intrigues me. I still haven't told her that we aren't even supposed to be texting. Or even be in each other's presence. I should explain. The marching band and football team have a rivalry. And this isn't some little friendly little slap in the face. No. This is like war. So in the beginning, band and football players were never really fond of each other. But then the marching band got a better award than football did. They wanted to rub it in a little. SO they displayed the trophy in the football trophy case. They did a little parade for themselves while the team was practicing and that's when the captain had enough of quote "All this 'band is better' bull shit. Football is what the school is known for. Not Band". Believe me or not, That is hanging up on a plaque in the the boy's locker room. So the football team got revenge. And this revenge was bad. The band did a little harmless prank. But the football team took it too far. They TPed the band room and while they were rehearsing on the field, they got ambushed with water guns and balloons. Apparently, instruments aren't supposed to get wet. That's when war commenced. This has been going on for years. I wasn't even in school yet. But every one who joins the football team or the marching band, is given a lesson or lecture about the history of this war and gives an oath or a writes in a book, like The Declaration of Independence, that you will fight for your people and support your people. All that jazz, blah blah blah. And if you disagree, you're out. I don't think the bad director knows, Let alone my coach.

I feel bad. I made that oath to my team. And I'm going against it. I wonder if Laura has had her history lesson and is signing the book yet. I hope my team doesn't know Laura's a band kid. Or else I'll be out. They must not know because I think I would be out by now if they knew. I'll just let it go until somebody brings it up to me.
