***Laura's POV

***2 Weeks Later***

So today we had a substitute in band. I knew that because when I walked in, people were goofing off a lot more than normal. But when they spotted me, the energy in the room dropped to zero. Someone closed the door behind me and turned the lights off.

"I'm not getting killed, am I?" I ask.

"No, you're not." Said the drum major. "Have a seat." He said gesturing to the middle seat in the front row.  I walked over and put my stuff down. All the kids walked up to the front of the classroom. One went outside and just stood there. My section leader brought a huge book over and put it on the music stand in front of him. "Laura, it's important that you listen up closely and do as we say."

"Well clearly. Adam is guarding the door, the lights are off and you are looking at me like I'm your mom and I just told you to clean your room." I said, and laughed.

All of the kids stared blankly at me. "This isn't the time for jokes."

"Sorry."

"Laura, I assume you already know the history of The Band and Football Rivalry?"

I looked at him with a confused face. "Um, no?" They all look at each other with concerned looks. There were people murmuring and gasping to each other.

"Silence!" The drum major yelled. They all stopped. "Laura, all you need to know is that Band students and Football players have disagreements, so to speak."

"We hate each other!" One kid yelled.

"What did I say about silence, Kevin?!"

"Sorry!"

The drum major turned back to me. "This is a serious matter. Band and football don't mix." He brought the book over to me. "By signing this book, you vow not to engage in conversation with any Football neanderthal. You vow to support you fellow band mates if they encounter a football player. You vow not to have and relationships with a Football player. And if you do, you're kicked out." All was silent until I spoke up.

"Hold on. This is a class. I can't get kicked out of a class. True. But I am drum major. And I can put you on probation and you won't be able to play or march with us." All I had in my head was Hayes. I really only had one friend and that was him. I didn't want to just stop contact with him. I mean I had to be honest, I was developing a crush on him and I feel like this book was the giant door just closing in my face, locking it, and throwing away the key.

I sighed and blinked at the line that was below many, many names from the past years of kids who vowed. I looked up at my drum major. He had a stern look on his face. Kevin come up and handed me a pen. I looked at it like a caveman seeing a phone for the first time. I looked at my section leader. He nodded. I looked back at the blank line, just waiting for my name to be signed. I slowly lowered the pen to the paper and signed my name in cursive, "Laura Clark".

"Welcome to band."
