"Respect"

"Respect goes both ways."

-Mary, Queen of Scots

-----------------------------------------------------

Caroline POV

I walk over to Valerie and we meet in a hug. "I'm sorry for your loss," she whispers in my ear. I nod sadly. "I'm sorry for your loss." We pull apart and she smiles sadly at my words. "Where have you been, Valerie?" She looks over my shoulder at Alaric who just spoke to her. "I've been around." She shrugs. I see her gaze shift and I look back to what she's looking at. "Are those the babies?" Her voice is soft. I nod proudly. "Can I meet them?" "You don't need to ask, I mean you saved my life and theirs." She smiles warmly and starts walking towards them. I guess Josie had walked back to Lizzie since she wasn't next to me like before.

Valerie reaches out to touch them and Lizzie shys away while Josie meets her in the middle. Josie reaches out and holds Valerie's hand. "I'm sorry." Valerie looks back at me confused when Josie speaks. "For what?" I walk over to them and I stand behind Valerie. I put my hand on her shoulder and I rest my head on my hand. "I know your story." Valerie looks back at me and I didn't realize how close our faces would be if she turned around. She looks at me shocked for a second and then she looks down quickly. "May I ask how you know my story?"

"My teacher Mr. Smith taught me about the heretics' story." I stare at my daughter confused. "Mr. Smith?" She looks at me and says, "Yeah, Mr. Smith. He teaches the extra class that helps students catch up on their work..." her voice trails off as she sees our confused expressions. "Why are you all looking at me like I'm crazy?" "Honey, there is no teacher named Mr. Smith at our school." She looks around wildly and I can hear her heartbeat rising.

Valerie reaches out and puts a comforting hand on Josie's shoulder. But when she touches her, Valerie recoils. "You have a very powerful spell on you." Alaric steps up protectively. "What do you mean?" "I mean, I can feel the spell on her by just touching her. If you didn't know about the spell then I'm assuming someone did it behind your back. I can siphon it off if you want." Alaric puts an arm in front of Josie and Lizzie. "There is no way I'm letting you touch my daughters."

Josie POV

My dad puts his arm in front of me and I feel slightly irritated that he thinks I can't protect myself. "Dad, if someone has a powerful spell on me then I want to know." "You don't know what's best for you, as the parent I do, so listen to me." I grab his arm and push it away. "You don't. Just because you're the parent and older than me doesn't mean you know better." I start walking past him and he grabs my shoulder and yanks me back towards him. "You will respect me, I am older than you and your father." I look at him coldly. "I will respect people who deserve it."

I can't explain it but for some reason, I felt hate towards my father. Usually, I was closer to my dad but now all I felt was anger and hatred towards him, I don't know why though.

I walk over to Valerie and I hold my hand out. "I'm ready." She grabs my hand and her hand emits a faint red glow. As she siphons from me my knees start to feel weak and my body feels tired. She keeps going and I'm not sure if she's siphoning the spell or from me. My knees buckle and I fall to the floor. My vision blurs as I look at the ceiling. I feel someone shake me. A mess of blonde curls comes into my visions along. The person waves their hand in front of my face and it only serves to worsen my headache.

I try to swat their hand away but my arm feels like stone. I try to lift my hand but it's too heavy. My headache gets worse. It feels like someone is stabbing my brain repeatedly with a fork and then tossing it into fire. It felt like thousands of nails were stuck in my brain. I groan with pain as a spike of pain goes through my head.

The edge of my vision clouds with darkness and I know that darkness is waiting for me. "Josie!" The voice is sluggish and slow and I can't comprehend who the voice belongs to. I feel someone shake me again and I groan louder. The shaking is only making the throbbing pain in my head get worse. I faintly hear voices calling my name. I breathe in and when I breathe out the only sound I hear is my breathing. My breaths come out short and shallow and with each breath, another sharp spike of pain goes through my head.

The pain keeps building and I want to scream but it feels as if my throat closed up. So the scream builds and builds until the dam breaks. My once heavy body sits up and I let out an ear-splitting scream. As I fall back to the floor I hear myself mutter two things.

                "I remember."
