Crowds of cheering onlookers gathered on the tarmac of Cape Canaveral Space Force Station Skid Strip, as well as various military and medical personnel. The astronauts made their way down the tarmac, some waving at the crowds before they're received by the medics.

The ramp of The Blackbird extends as the X-Men disembark. They are surprised by the deafening cheer that immediately rings out at the sight of them. Excitement is in the air. Children chant their names, some holding on to toy figurines of the mutants, others pointing out their favourites to their parents. Elation as contagious as the flu.

Jean stops and takes it all in, her smile broadening with every cheer.

The cheers continue as the X-Men enter their home back at the mansion. The entire student body is there to greet them with smiling faces and deafening applause. The team smile back, sheepish and awkward. Mystique shies away for a moment, morphing from her blue form back into her blonde human guise.

Xavier wheels out of the crowd, a father's pride upon his face

Xavier wheels out of the crowd, a father's pride upon his face. He motions at the students. "That's enough boys and girls, that's enough," he said, and the students quiet down, "The X-men have today done an incredibly brave thing. They've once again proven to humanity exactly why they need us. People like yourselves."

He turns to the team.

"The President sends his regards, as well as his heartfelt gratitude. And as for myself, I've never been prouder. Enjoy yourselves, you deserve it," he smiled, "In fact you all do. No more class, the end of the day!"

More cheers erupt from the students as the team breaks away. Jubilee and Dust immediately rush up to Jean and Storm with hugs and broad smiles. Colossus and some others greet Nightcrawler and the guys, lots of claps on the back and well-wishes.

Xavier approaches Jean.

"Jean? You gave us quite a scare up there. How are you feeling?"

He's never seen her so free, so radiant. Like a weight has been lifted off her shoulders. There's an easy light to her now. Almost like happiness.

"Actually...I feel fine," she smiled back at him.

"Hank, could you take a look at Jean?" Xavier called to Beast, "Just a standard medical for anyone injured in the field."

Beast nods and Jean smiles at him. They walk off and Xavier is met with Mystique's stony face. He takes in a sharp breath as she approaches.

"You know, the President was almost sending his condolences," she said, tersely, "She should be dead."

"Well, thankfully, she's not." Xavier puts his power-chair into motion and heads towards his study. Mystique, however, isn't through and she follows.

Both pass Quicksilver thrilling a throng of younger students.

"I basically did everything. I mean, Jean helped. A little. Towards the end," he fibbed, "but it was basically all me."

Mystique enters Xavier's study and shuts the door behind her as Charles crosses to his desk. "You put this team in danger," she said with controlled anger.
