Kurt takes hold of Jean and they teleport back to the unstable shuttlecraft.

They appear amidst the chaos, for without Storm's ice to seal it, the cabin was quickly disintegrating. Various alarms were ringing out from the console systems. Nightcrawler leaves Jean in the cabin as she begins to telekinetically keep it from falling apart.

He teleports to the airlock, where he narrowly misses a large satellite dish, free-floating in the sea of other such debris.

"We've got 20 seconds," Beast reminded through the communications system in Nightcrawler's ear.

He spots the commander at the far end of the room, still hard at work, unaware of the chaos behind him.

"Ten..." Beast counts down.

Nightcrawler teleports out, reappearing a few meters from the commander and bounds over to him. The man is startled but Kurt has no time for pleasantries —

"Nine...eight..."

Jean holds her shield, keeping the forces at bay. Arms outstretched. Messianic.

"Seven... six..."

Jean looks worried as the glare from the flare lights up the cabin. She can feel the heat, the power.

Nightcrawler grabs the commander's arm and tries to get Jean in his sights but the swarm of debris won't let him —

"Five... four..."

— with barefaced desperation, Nightcrawler teleports out to the end of the cabin —

— The red light washes over Cyclops's strained face —

"Three... two..."

Jean hears it before she sees anything. Gazing into the heart of the cloud, she sees what appears to be a shape, a creature of some kind...winged...burning...heading straight for her —

"One..."

— the screech of a bird of prey reverberates throughout the cabin as Jean is engulfed in the flare —

Nightcrawler makes for Jean when both he and the commander are thrown back by the force of the oncoming flare

Nightcrawler makes for Jean when both he and the commander are thrown back by the force of the oncoming flare.

BAMF! Nightcrawler and the commander reappear in the Blackbird's cabin, still in motion. Nightcrawler slows their trajectory before they slam into the back wall.

The massive flare engulfs the shuttle, which completely disappears. Only the onrush of crimson clouds.

Cyclops spins round, his voice is pure grief.

"Where's Jean...?" he demands, "Kurt, where is she? WHERE IS SHE?"

Nightcrawler has no words, shaking his head repeatedly, tears running down his face.                  "I...I couldn't...I'm sorry..."

The flare has completely overrun the shuttle, and is now threatening to do the same to The Blackbird. Mystique and Beast scramble at the controls to prepare.

"Brace for impact!" Beast calls.

Jean is lifeless as the flare washes over her, entering every cell of her body. Then her eyes fly open -- a burning intensity -- the flare taking on a firebird form around her, with wings outstretched to match her arms. She looks over to the Blackbird, mere inches from the rest of the flare and swivels her hand to affect it.

The flare immediately begins to recede from the Blackbird, sweeping back towards the Endeavour like the swash of the ocean tides.

Jean gasps as the flare rushes in over her, taking in more and more, the firebird aura growing larger. The entire flare moves in reverse, quickly gaining speed as it's sucked back to the Endeavour

The intensity and force is too much to bear, the last remnants overwhelming. Jean screams as she is overrun, her cry morphing into an avian screech that reaches a fevered pitch ...

The firebird aura appears around Xavier for a brief moment, his eyes wide with the sheer majesty of the image.

The Endeavour explodes ...

Cyclops is on his feet, his pain made clearer by the light of the fireball bright on his face.

The flames dissipate as quickly as they appeared, all is still once more. Nothing is left of the Endeavour -- not a single piece. Then the darkness is lit by the reappearance of a gigantic firebird. It bursts into sight, blazing wings outstretched, the tips of which seem to singe the edge of the universe itself.

Mystique, Beast and the others shield their eyes from the radiant display. And then it's gone. Leaving a motionless figure alone, floating in the vast vacuum of space. Glowing like dying embers, traces of fire snake across her face and into her hair before vanishing altogether. She looks so peaceful.

Smoke swirls over her and Nightcrawler takes her in his arms, his expression a mix of relief and incredulity before the pair vanish from sight

Smoke swirls over her and Nightcrawler takes her in his arms, his expression a mix of relief and incredulity before the pair vanish from sight.

Nightcrawler reappears within the Blackbird and steadies Jean, the gravity allowing her to float in midair. Cyclops glides over immediately, taking her face in his hands. Flaming images of Jean flash through his mind — an alien civilisation — a crystal glints in the light —

Slowly she comes to, her eyes struggling to focus but when they do all she sees is him. All Cyclops sees is the brief flecks of fire burning brightly in his eyes before vanishing.

"Is... is everyone okay?" Jean asked, softly.

Cyclops fights back the emotion, nodding profusely.                                                                          "Everyone's okay."

He drops his head on her shoulder, hugging her close. Mystique smiles at Beast. Relief cuts through the tension of the cabin with ease. Jean holds Cyclops tight.

"Then let's go home."
