All four of you stare in shock at his casualness.
The King was leaning back against the wooden chair, letting his full body go limp and not bothering to put up a posture. The rest of you at least sat straight and acted in a formal manner, even Alicia was acting more polite than usual.
Probably just being a suck up you thought.
"Actually your majesty," Alicia said. "We were just talking about my fathers kingdom." Alicia sounded way less condescending than usual, in fact, she sounded quite perky.
Alicia waddles on about "her" kingdom and her fathers hierarchical superiority, explaining in vivid detail about her family's importance and how loved they are by the community.
"You must be quite excited to take over then Alicia, your father and I are actually good friends." The King said.
Alicia smiles brightly, enjoying The Kings response.
"Alicia, I thought you weren't-"
A thump silenced anymore queries.
It was clear Alicia was taking this competition seriously, in her eyes she was going to win no matter what. It seemed though she wasn't in it for the Prince's heart, but the crown itself.
"Actually sir," you spoke up. "I have a question regarding family matters, I believe I'm not the only one curious about that." You weren't sure if anyone else was curious, but you needed to tell your father what happened and maybe find a way out of here.
"Ah, right in the nitty gritty I see. You waste no time at all, do you (Y/N)?" How he knew your name wasn't important, but him reading you felt a bit uncomfortable. "All of you will be able to talk to your family through writing," his head turned to address the group of you. "However, I cannot allow face to face contact, for security reasons of course. Luckily, I don't think either of you are planning on running away." Okay, running away was a long shot, but you didn't think it was impossible. Now, that theory has changed.
No way in, no way out.
You were stuck here and there was nothing you could do about it... unless.
"One last thing your majesty, you said something about a test?" If this test was a literal thing, you could easily flunk it on purpose, maybe then they'll let you out. Or even better, not let you participate at all.
Now everyone was interested in that question, the group looked towards The King, eager to hear his answer.
He chuckles at the amount of star eyed stares.
"Right, let's get down to business shall we." The King's aura changed instantly, solemnity leached off of him, sending a light shiver down your spine.
He explained that the test wasn't anything you answer on a piece of paper, or a type of obstacle course you must complete, not even a riddle that has to be solved.
"What is it then?" It aggravated you, not knowing what you're doing or what you must do. You had zero control over this situation, and there was nothing you could do about it.
Sure you might like The King, but him being so secretive weighed on you, it made you pinch your knees and elbows.
The other girls were taken back by your poor rudeness, staring at you with wide eyes.
"I assure you there is nothing to worry about, just enjoy your time here, for however long it lasts." God this was so suspicious, why did he have to say it like that?
"What do you mean by however long it lasts, is there a time limit?" Okay, speaking to the King incompetently was one thing, but questioning him?
Maybe you should stop talking.
"I hope you aren't suspicious of me (Y/N), I can tell you are a very smart young woman. So, instead of over-thinking this situation, just think of it as a get away or a time to relax." Irritating him probably wasn't the best idea, especially right now and during the festival week. So instead, you nod your head and look down at your hands curled together.
The silence only lasted a moment before the doors swung open again, slamming against the walls.
"Y-Your highness, p-please wait just a moment!" A butler called out.
"Father."
And there he was.
The Blade.
He stalked towards The King, wasting no time to look back and check the man calling for him.
"Ah, my son. Please do have a seat." The Blade stood over him, staring down with absolute rage, his eyes were narrowed and mouth almost in a snarl. The King merely smiled back at him, directing his eyes to the four of you.
Great, who knows how long you will have to deal with this asshole. Not only does he fight anyone who even confronts him, but he has daddy issues.
The Blade takes a breath before standing up straight.
"Apologies for my rudeness, I didn't realise there were beautiful young women in our presence." You scoff at his fake attitude, catching a glare from him. He obviously knew the four of you were there, he just can't control his anger.
The Blade walked over to the empty chair, sitting with a huff. Of course, that was the chair next to both you and Victoria.
He hasn't taken his eyes off you.
Like a predator watching it's prey.
Bet he didn't expect you to be here.
You look back at him, smiling kindly. If he wants to act like a creep, he can, but now feels like a good time to get back at him.
"Your highness, it's so nice to finally meet you," you leaned in, tracing a finger slowly over his forearm. "I didn't realise you and your father were so close." You smirked.
He pulls away, breathing hard. His eyes still never leaving yours, those red angry eyes.
"Right," The King clapped. "I believe now is a good time for some late lunch."
