Your right side door swiftly opened with a hand greeting you.
"M'lady, welcome to The Castle of Eedin. I hope your stay here will be comfortable and memorable." What looked to be a knight awaited for your hand, without any other options, you reluctantly accepted, pulling yourself out of the small carriage. The sun beamed down on you, as you squint your eyes slightly. Taking a quick glance at your surroundings, you noticed three other women come out of their own carriages. All with the same look as you. Gazing back at the knight, you nod your head in a thank you and replace his hand with your sachet.
All four of you walk up to the bottom of the stairs, including some other knights.
This was kinda scary, you've never been here before or been in a situation like this. This wasn't your preferred crowd to be in either, you would rather be in no crowd at all actually.
You all give each other an unknown and awkward look, before you climb up the stairs first. It might be scary, but you were brave and frankly didn't care to be stood dumbly outside a golden palace. The other girls followed suit, click clacking with each step of their heels.
You were first to the top, there weren't that many stairs anyway, maybe twenty at most. It took a bit longer for the other girls though, but that's probably because they were wearing deathly tall heels and annoyingly large gowns, which are both probably super uncomfortable. Unlike you, who wasn't even breaking a sweat in your boots.
They all huff once reaching the top.
"Okay, that's it." A short blonde crosses her arms. "What the hell is this? What are we doing here? Someone better give me some damn answers, or I'm seriously going to lose it." She taps her heel continuously on the ground, with very obvious irritation.
You look back down at the steps, hoping to ask the knights that very question, only to find them symmetrically standing side by side at the bottom of the stairs.
"Maybe we have to wait for someone?" A different girl spoke, she had chestnut brown hair and honey skin. She seemed confused, but definitely more calm than the others, including yourself even. She probably feels more comfortable being in this sort of area, rather than in a tightly spaced carriage. That you can agree on.
The blonde scoffed, glancing at the girl next to her.
"And who are you?" She notions to the red head. The girl in particular was probably the most beautiful out of the four of you, at least in your eyes. She had sunset orange hair tied in a braid and freckles that danced all over her fair skin. You could have easily mistaken her for a Princess.
"I beg your pardon?" Her voice was thick with a posh accent and sternness, the blonde just twitches her eyebrows in a daring taunt. "You should watch the way you speak to me, I'm Duchess Elania of the Azeris Kingdom." The Azeris Kingdom wasn't anything special, it was quite new actually, it was based more south of the country. Being in the middle of everything made you automatically "important", small kingdoms like Azeris were nothing to be proud of, especially being so new and low on the map.
The blonde laughs.
"Uhh, right okay." She mockingly waves a hand at her dejectedly, Elania just gives a very silent glare.
"Um, my name is Victoria," the chestnut haired girl spoke, breaking the awkwardness. "I'm not exactly a duchess, but I do make dresses for the royalty over in the Nebia territory." Ah, the Nebia dominion. It wasn't known for anything like winning wars or having a famous royal family, but it was known as one of the biggest trading spots in the entire country. The Eedin Kingdom trades with them constantly, mainly for their silk and fabrics. It made sense for Victoria to be a type of tailor then, her dress she's wearing must be constructed by her as well. It had a long sleeved, white collared top, with a plaid oak bottom that reached to her ankles. She wore a simple silk bow tie that fitted around her neck to top it all off, it was very sophisticated.
The other girls wore more of the stereotypically royal dresses, short sleeved tops that had big poofy bottoms, both with a silk overlay. This gave you the same sense of insecurity as before, maybe you should have worn something other than old jeans and a tank top.
"My family actually made that dress you're wearing I believe," she pointed to the blonde's dress.
There was a slight pause before she spoke.
"Okay?" The blonde's tone was laced with arrogance. "Since no one is asking, I'll just introduce myself shall I?" You roll your eyes as the three of you give short nods. "Right well," she places her left hand on her heart. "My name is Lady Alicia Peruvian Roman the third, based on my own mother's royal maiden name. I also happen to be born into one of the most prestigious royal family's of the entire country, we are from the Varian Kingdom." As her hand was still hard on her chest, she released a breath with a dramatic sigh.
Everyone else hums with her pronounced introduction.
She wasn't wrong about her family being prestigious, her family lives in the biggest land based kingdom in the country. It was known for destroying many old nations to get its size. Though because of that, agriculture and cultivation was its kingdom's biggest profit. The nation sold many crops like wheat and canola, but even more nation wide products like papyrus.
"What about you?" Victoria looked towards you with a kind smile.
"Her? She hasn't spoken a word since we arrived here, I honestly thought she was a servant." Alicia said.
"Aha, funny." You cross your arms. "My name is (Y/N) and I'm a blacksmith that lives here in Eedin, around over there." You point vaguely over in the direction of where you think your house is. Your voice was noticeably different from the others, theirs was more pronounced and proper, whereas yours was more slowed and slanged.
Victoria and Elania both nod, Alicia just looks disinterested.
"Great, now that we're all best friends. How about we actually figure out what's going on, because my feet are starting to hurt and I am so not paying for another foot scrub." You wanted to chime in with a sarcastic comment about how her parents probably paid for it, but she is right. We have been standing here for a long while now, the knights haven't moved and no one has come to get us.
"I don't think it's a bad thing, I would rather wait before the competition started anyway." Victoria spoke.
"Competition? What competition?" Elania asked.
"Oh my god, are you actually that slow? Obviously the test to become the next queen you hog." Alicia replied. "Honestly it is just a waste of time anyway, this is all about beauty right? That's why we were picked." She looks at everyone one by one, "and.. not to be rude, but it doesn't look like that much of a competition." Holy crap, this girls narcissism was getting on your nerves. Once again though, she was right. Each of us was picked based on looks, well except you.
"Maybe it's a battle to the death, full of bloodshed and tears."
...
"Or not." You quipped
"Okay creepy," Alicia said. "I'm staying at least ten meters away from you at all times." She took a step back.
Victoria gave an amused smirk as Elania just looked lost.
That was when the two large front doors opened.
"Ladies," a man dressed in a tight black suit said. "Sorry for the wait, please come right this way.
With that, all four of you made your way inside the royal castle.
