[Small part for now sorry, super tired! Longer one out tomorrow 🤍] ~Emily
"I can't believe him, Victoria."
You managed to find Victoria right before dinner, she was hiding in one of the castle's many libraries, feeding herself with an old cookbook. It was hard finding alone time with her, she was always either pulled away with an activity or avoiding Anne. It was funny to you, but not to Vick. You were happy to find her though, even if you may have interrupted her light reading.
"What do you expect? He's a Prince after all." She leans back against a red velvet lounge, scraping away another page in her book.
"I guess." You sigh. "But, why does he have to be such an asshole?" You cross your arms with annoyed intent, hoping Victoria will agree with your childish ranting.
"I mean, it was just a piece of paper right? I don't really see the big deal." Victoria talks to the book as if she's talking to you, too interested in baking flour to look in your direction.
"Agh." You ruffle your hair.
"Relax (Y/N), it's just a note." She's right, but she doesn't know the whole story. She doesn't know about the gutted cow or alleged murder - or how much of a dick the next King to be is. "Besides, don't you hate him anyway? You shouldn't be getting so worked up over whether he likes you or not." You blush.
Okay, well. She didn't have to word it like that.
It gave you flashbacks of when you were a child, even then you were an outcast. A lot of the kids would make fun of you, there wasn't a specific reason of course, you were just chosen. That's how it usually goes anyway, you just happened to be the unlucky duckling. It resulted in others being forced to go through the same treatment if they were associated with you, especially if they were a boy.
God, there was no end to it.
Nowadays, you didn't care if it were a man or a woman. It always ended the same way.
Same old words, same old heartbreak.
But, it was probably a good thing? Right?
Because now, you find comfort in lonely dark corners. Little crooks inside black rooms, completely hidden to the public eye and only shown to you. No pressure of outside peers and their condescending words of judgement or advice, even if that's the case. You can't help but feel the need to prove yourself to others, whether it be to look cool or just to be liked.
Maybe that's the reason why his words affect you so deeply.
"Yeah, you're right." The tension releases in your shoulders. "I'll just move on and forget about it I guess." Sometimes lying to yourself is all you can do.
"Good luck."
...
"Huh?"
She flips another page.
"Good luck forgetting about it, Alicia's probably told everyone by now."
What.
"What?" Victoria sighs, placing the book open on her lap.
"Alicia saw you two leaving a room together on the far side of the castle." She looks you up and down. "It looked... suspicious." You knew what she meant.
Everyone's gonna think you and the Prince are getting it on.
"Please tell me you're joking." Your voice almost croaked - blood teasing with panic.
"I wish I was." She breathed out an annoyed huff.
"Are you... mad?" You question. "You of all people should know I don't 'care' for him like that." You couldn't help but think back to those words, 'I would never care for something like you.'
How you wish he didn't mean it.
Victoria didn't say anything, pretending to read her book to avoid your worried gaze.
"Vick, come on."
"What do you expect me to think (Y/N)?" She stands up suddenly, cascading her book to the lounge. "We're all trying our best to win this competition and share his rare moments of exposure." She looks away. "Meanwhile, you and his majesty are whispering behind closed doors."
Her words punctured your heart, stabbing it over and over with a blade of guilt. Even if in reality, you didn't do anything wrong, nor was it even true. Still, coming from her it meant something.
Similar to the Blade in a weird way, except - Victoria was closer to a friend.
Something you haven't had in a long time.
Victoria walked past you abruptly, heading straight for the door.
"Victoria, wait!" You latch onto her wrist, rubbing your thumb across her smooth skin. "I didn't do any of those things, I swear!" You plea with full emotion. "I had no idea this meant so much to you."
Her almond eyes gloss over you only for a moment, before dejectedly turning away.
"All I care about is the facts." She rips her arm away from you, creating a whip of air.
"Stop ruining this for me." Victoria turns away, disappearing straight out the door.
She leaves you there, head full of spiked words and an aggravated aura.
Maybe flour filled feelings really are nothing but flakes of powdered lies.
