Foolish was a totem hybrid, the rarest type. He was the only one in his school, making him stick out like a sore thumb. Even though he was still in 10th grade everyone knew who he was, his golden skin a shiny contrast to everyone else's.
For whatever reason an older group of boys started picking on him, discovering things that only pushed them to continue, like the fact that his tears weren't normal tears, they were tears of gold.
One thing about being a totem was that his injuries healed themselves, meaning that the bullying had no lasting consequences, at least physically they didn't.
He never told his boyfriends, not wanting to seem weak or that he couldn't stand up for himself. By the end of the day his injuries were healed, Sam and Ponk never seeing any marks or scrapes on his skin.
It had been months, the fact that they hadn't gotten bored was a shock to Foolish. He walked into the school building, dread pooled in his stomach.
His boyfriends were both a year older, meaning he couldn't see them during the school day at all, their lunch periods at two different times.
He walked to his locker and quickly grabbed the books he needed, hurrying across the building to his boyfriend's lockers, sighing in relief seeing them there.
He walked up to them and said hi, the three talking for a few minutes before heading to their first bells. He sat down and listened to his teacher start the lesson, trying his best to ignore the jabs of a pencil in the back of his neck.
When it was time for lunch he sighed, accepting that there was nowhere to hide from them anymore. He walked into the bathroom, the one in the math wing, and sat in a stall, poking at his lunch but not eating any of it.
He heard a door open, the familiar voice he hated getting louder as he entered the room, just one of them this time.
"It only took me 5 minutes this time, you're getting worse."
Foolish kept quiet, not giving in to his taunts.
"C'mon golden boy, I know you're here, you know what'll happen if you don't come out here."
Foolish sighed, putting his lunch away and standing up, knowing it would be worse if he didn't go, already trying to force his tears down, the main reason he got picked on.
"5, 4, 3.."
Foolish opened the stall door and stepped out, head down.
"Good choice."
Before he registered the movement a fist collided with his jaw, making him stagger back and his eyes brim with tears, tears very close to spilling over.
Another punch hit him higher up on his face, the right side of his forehead. He groaned, a few tears slipping out before he could stop them. The bully smiled maniacally, the golden tears shining beautifully in the light.
"Wow, that was quick, and look, still no boyfriends in sight! If only you had someone better, someone who actually gave you attention."
Foolish knew he was referring to himself, a laugh bubbling in his throat that he forced down. Foolish closed his eyes when he saw the guy line up for another punch, bracing himself, tears still spilling from his eyes.
He heard the door open and slowly opened his eyes to see his boyfriends, shock and anger on their faces, the tips of Ponk's hair ignited with small flames.
They didn't give him time to explain, not that they cared what he had to say. Sam walked up to the guy and immediately started beating him up, anger running high.
Ponk walked up to Foolish and pulled him into a hug, rubbing his back and comforting him, the fires on his hair dying down since he was more focused on making sure his boyfriend was okay.
"Let's go home." Sam said, standing up and smoothing his shirt, knuckles bruised.
Foolish and Ponk agreed and the three walked out of the building, heading towards Sam's car and getting in, immediately heading to his house.
Ponk sat in the back with Foolish, rubbing his thumbs over Foolish's cheeks to wipe the tears away, small smile on his face.
Foolish didn't say much for the next few hours, not really wanting to talk about it, which his boyfriends understood.
The three just cuddled up in Sam's bed, Foolish's two injuries completely healed up by the time he drifted off to sleep.
The boys at school didn't dare step near Foolish again, not after their leader got a taste of his own medicine.
