He freezes. "What are you doing?"

"Thank you." You say into his stomach before letting go and pulling away.

"Yeah." He nodded before sitting down again. "You need three weeks rest. Then we will re-evaluate. It may be six."

"What? No. I feel fine, reall-" you tried to get up. Levi cut you off by placing his hands on your shoulders. Keeping light pressure to stop you from trying to get off the bed.

"You are going to rest. That's an order."

You laid back against the pillows he arranged for you. "Captain?" You looked at the ceiling.

Levi looked at you, it was the familiar feeling you'd grown to like. "yes?"

"Why are you being so nice to me?" You looked at him with confusion. "I was sure you hated me."

"I don't hate you, Brat." He said quietly, fixing the disorganized stack of books on his desk. Turning back to you, he sat down. "It seems that I have formed a bond with you." Levi was looking at the ground, thinking about how to explain things.

"What do you mean a bond?" You blinked.

"When I first met you, I was ready to treat you like any other Cadet." He explained. "Something happened when I made contact with you in the stables a while ago."

"You mean when you beat me?" You exaggerated without amusement. He rolled his eyes.

"Even listening to you read that first night and the following night. I felt... Drawn." He moved his eyes to meet you "Have you felt anything?" Levi asked slowly.

"No." You lied. "I did know someone was there that first day in the Dining Hall. I didn't know it was you, I just knew someone was there and that they weren't a threat." You explained as those hours flashed before your eyes. "That's why I read aloud.." you didn't want the other person in there to be lonely.

"Yet, you didn't know a man with the intent of ill harm followed you in last night?" He said almost sarcastically.

"No, I didn't." You looked down. "I should have. I must be slipping." You rubbed your head. "And I thought my shitty childhood at least gifted me reflexes."

"It couldnt have been that bad." Levi rocked back, remembering his childhood. Sitting beside his mother's corpse. Starving. His father figure abandoning him.

You pondered a minute. Wondering if you should tell him. "Levi..." You mumbled. Realizing how informal you were, you quickly corrected yourself a little louder hoping he didn't hear you the first time, "Corporal, Captain, Sir or whatever... I grew up in the underground." You kept your eyes on your hands, playing with the blanket. Some people considered those that came from the underground to be tainted.. unclean.

You felt his eyes on you, "You... What?" He said in disbelief.

You told him your address, how you lived there when your father was killed because he stole food to feel you. You also told him about your mother abandoning you, she blamed you for his death. Your voice and face was emotionless as you explained, it was so long ago. "I was eight years old and on my own."

"You were just a few doors down from me.." Levi said.

"Wait, what?" You looked at him. He hadn't realized what he said aloud. You narrowed your eyes, then it clicked. "WAIT! YOU!...you..I remember you. You and two other people would come and go from a larger building. I watched you often.." you confessed in disbelief. Leaning closer, looking him up and down, "You really haven't aged much. How did I not see this before."

Levi's mouth hung open the smallest bit as he racked his memory. He hadn't thought about that place in so long. As he dug deeper, he did remember having a little shadow at times. A kid that would watch him and he friends, he just ignored it though. "How did you make it to the surface?"

"I got caught by some men, I was stealing. I was about 10. They had some horrific plans for me, I thought my life was over. That's when a nice couple stopped us and bought me off them. I guess the woman couldn't have kids and they wanted to give one a better future." You shrugged. "I got.. lucky."

Levi rocked back in his chair, taking all the Information in. Is this why he chose you? A thousand thought ran through his mind. He didn't want to make you explain anymore, he understood. He even met your parent briefly when you were about 4.

"So..." You started. "what does this bond thing mean? Are we like best friends now or something?" You asked with a chuckle.

"Normally Ackerman's would bond to the royal family as their protectors, however my clan hasn't done that in some time. So it happens with other people." He explained as he shook his head, bringing himself out of everything going on in his mind. "I just feel the need to.. protect you." He would also do almost anything you asked of him, but he wasn't going to disclose that information.

"Oh... So now your stuck with me." You sighed, forgetting that caused you pain.

Levi brought a hand up, tussling your already messy hair. "You're on my squad. I was stuck with you regardless." He sighed "it's more like you're stuck with me."

You did feel drawn to him. You watched as he got up and walked to the door. "Where are you going?" You asked, starting to lean forward, ready to get up.

"To get you some painkillers. Stay put, you're in no condition to be moving at the moment." With that, he left.

You laid back on your pillows, looking down at the damp towel that covered your injury. It's almost like he doesn't have a choice but to be nice to me. You closed your eyes.

---------

You woke up to someone patting your face agressively. "Hey..Hey! Wake up, quickly I'm getting you out of here."

Opening your eyes you turned to find Jean. "What are you doing?" You asked groggily.

"Look at what he's done to you... I knew he was being hard on you but to lock you up here with that!" He motioned to your huge bruise.

"No! No it's not what it looks like.." you tried to explain, Jean bent down to pick you up, causing huge shots of pain in your ribs "Ah-Ow!" You swatted him, he didn't listen. "Put me down! Captain didn't do this!" You said quickly.

Jean paused, holding you. "Then.. why are you in his room?" He looked at you.

"I refused to go to the infirmary. I think it's full and the man that did this to me is there, I don't want to be in the same place as him." You tried to cross your arms, looking off to the side with your eyes closed. "Now please put me down!"

Jean shifted his weight between feet, causing more pain in your body "OW!" You gasped

Before you could say anything further the door to the room opened.
