Lukas has said nothing in the time that we have been in the car. The radio is turned on, I'm guessing to drown out the silence inside of the car.
Sadly, the radio does nothing to fade the growing tension between us. The air is filled with unsaid statements and unanswered questions. I find myself growing anxious about what Lukas is thinking.
I twiddle my fingers together, growing more and more aggravated by each second. How can he act like nothing happened just a while ago? I let out a sigh trying to calm my nerves.
Let it go.
The need to get everything off of my chest lingers. I hold back the urge to snap at him. After a while I take a quick glance over at Lukas. His eyebrows are furrowed, and his veiny hands are gripping the steering wheel tight.
Why is he angry?
After a few seconds, I finally build up the courage to break the silence, "What's wrong with you?" I ask, using the little breath I have left in my throat, "You were just fine a second ago." The question comes out rushed and angry. It's clear that I'm just as ticked as he is.
Lukas doesn't acknowledge me. His eyes stay steady on the road. It seems as if he hasn't heard me speak at all. Is he ignoring me? I shouldn't jump to conclusions.
Maybe I said it too low for him to hear. I reach forward to turn down the radio. Before I can turn the fixture, Lukas' pushes my hand away from it. I speak again, "Well did you hear me?" I raise my voice, "I asked you what's wrong."
Lukas pays no attention to me. Instead he reaches up to increase the volume of the music drowning out my voice entirely.
My anger doubles at the gesture. If I was in a cartoon I'm sure steam would be shooting out of my ears. "So you're doing this shit on purpose?" I ask loudly, eyebrows furrowing deeper at every second that passes by.
Calm down Bailey.
Lukas keeps his eyes on the road. After a few seconds of waiting for him to answer I let my anger get the best of me.
"Pull the car over." I snap, "Pull the car over right now. I really don't have time for your shit."
I see Lukas' heavy facade loosen up. "I'm not pulling this car over." he answers, dismissing me entirely. I am fed up. I'm tired of being treated this way.
I snatch the wheel from his hands, steering us over onto the side of the road, "I said pull the fucking car over!" The car swerves but before it runs into the woods, Lukas grabs the wheel away from me and presses quickly down onto the brakes. "You could've killed us, why do some shit like that Bailey!"
I roll my eyes at him, "I told you to pull the car over, that's your fault for not listening." I snap, picking up my purse. Once I get my stuff together, I reach over to pull the handle.
Before I can open the door I hear a small click indicating that he's locked it. Lukas puts the car in park, "What the hell has gotten into you?"
"Why are you ignoring me?" Lukas doesn't answer the question. He just stares at me. It makes me want to reach over the seat and punch him straight in the nose. "Oh for fuck's sake, let me out."
"I'm not letting you out of this car. Do not ask me again." he mutters, ending the conversation.
I huff like a child, and watch the leaves on the trees outside sway. I watch the moon shine down on the grass. The glow creates a beautiful luminescence that calms a little of my anger.
"I don't understand the problem with you." I speak, "Sometimes you can't stop touching me, and other times you shut me out." I look at him, "Why do you confuse me like this, Lukas?"
