How did we get here?

Harley's heart skipped a beat as the motorbike continued to circle her car, its rider leaning in close enough for her to hear the familiar rumble of their engine. She could practically feel the tension crackling between them, despite the playful tone in her voice.

"Miss me?" Harley asked, turning her head slightly to catch a glimpse of the rider, but not breaking her smile.

"Hey little orphan." The nickname she used made Harley grin even wider. She hadn't heard it in what felt like forever. She knew exactly who it was. There was only one person who could drive like that, effortlessly gliding through the chaos around them, as if they were born for moments like this.

The rider slowed the bike and came to a stop next to her vehicle, kicking the stand down with a fluid motion. Harley caught sight of the gloved hands gripping the handlebars and the outline of the rider's silhouette. Without hesitation, Harley shoved the car door open, stepping out and strutting toward the rider. The wind from the chase tossed her hair around, but she didn't care.

"Didn't think I'd see you again, kid," Harley teased, circling the bike with a mischievous smile. "Aren't you supposed to be playing hero somewhere?"

The rider removed their helmet, revealing the familiar face of Barbara Gordon, better known as Oracle. Her expression was as fierce as ever, though there was a subtle hint of a smirk tugging at the corners of her lips.

"I don't just play hero," Oracle replied coolly, wiping the dirt from her visor. "I clean up your messes, Harley."

Harley let out a loud laugh, throwing her head back in amusement. She knew she had a knack for getting herself into trouble, but Oracle always managed to show up just when things got chaotic. She could never quite decide whether she liked having Oracle as an adversary or an ally—sometimes both.

"But you didn't have to chase me this time, Babs. I'm doing fine all on my own." Harley winked, her eyes sparkling with mischief as she leaned against the bike. "Those cops? They were never gonna catch me."

Oracle just shook her head, but Harley could tell the woman was trying not to laugh. "I wouldn't be too sure about that. There are always more people after you, and I'm not in the mood to clean up another mess."

Harley felt a small pang of guilt—though it didn't last long. She had grown used to that feeling by now, but she also knew how to shrug it off. In the grand scheme of things, she wasn't going to change anytime soon.

"You know," Oracle continued, her tone softer but still tinged with that sharp edge, "If you wanted help, you could've just called."

Harley's expression faltered for a second, just a brief moment where the weight of her actions seemed to catch up with her. She hadn't reached out to Oracle in a while—not since the last time things had gone wrong between them. But she didn't let the moment linger.

"Maybe next time, huh?" Harley replied quickly, flashing another bright smile, and for a moment, it felt like nothing had changed.

The sound of approaching sirens brought her back to the reality of their situation. Harley glanced over her shoulder, eyeing the chaos they'd caused in their wake, before looking back at Barbara. "We better get out of here. I'd hate for your friends to show up and ruin all the fun."

Barbara gave a reluctant nod, slipping her helmet back on as she revved the engine of her bike. "You know, one of these days, you're going to have to stop running."

"Maybe, but not today," Harley said, already slipping into the driver's seat of her car. The moment she slammed the door shut, she was ready to go again.

"Let's see who's faster, then," Barbara said with a challenging grin, speeding off down the road with Harley hot on her heels.

As the two sped through the streets, dodging obstacles and racing ahead, Harley couldn't help but feel a strange mix of exhilaration and nostalgia. This wasn't the first time they'd been on opposite sides of the law, but something about today felt different—like maybe, just maybe, they could both leave their pasts behind and start something new.

But with a sigh, Harley quickly dismissed the thought. After all, who needed stability when the thrill of the chase was all she needed?

Her laughter filled the car as she pushed the pedal to the metal, chasing down the road ahead with a renewed sense of freedom and mischief.
