Harley hesitated for a moment before taking his hand, letting him pull her to her feet. She eyed him suspiciously, her expression a mix of confusion and curiosity.
"Why are you being nice to me?" Her voice was high-pitched, almost a whine, as if she couldn't quite understand his kindness.
He shrugged, leaning against the wall next to her. "The world needs a little good," he said with an easy grin. "We don't always have to be fighting."
Harley narrowed her eyes, as if weighing his words. She didn't entirely trust him, but there was something in his demeanor that made her relax. She let her guard down, a hint of a smile tugging at her lips.
"I'm so glad you came around—or at least someone did." Her bottom lip stuck out in a dramatic pout, a touch of sadness flickering in her eyes. "Mr. J humiliated me! In a restaurant!" She threw an arm dramatically toward the restaurant across the busy street, where the Joker sat at a table, acting as if nothing had happened. He ate his meal, ignoring the stares of the surrounding people, and Harley's heart ached as she watched him.
Nightwing glanced at the Joker for a moment, then back at Harley. He saw the tear tracks on her bruised face, the physical marks of the abuse she'd endured. Gotham knew about the physical bruises, but the mental damage was less visible. Everyone knew about the Joker's cruelty, but Harley had her own way of fighting back.
Nightwing rubbed the back of his neck, unsure of how to comfort her. He wasn't exactly the type to handle delicate emotions, and this wasn't a situation he was prepared for. But Harley let out a cry, her hands covering her face as she sobbed, and he awkwardly patted her on the back, unsure of what else to do.
Harley quickly wiped her eyes, standing up and brushing off her tears with the edge of her sleeve.
"Why not go hang with your girlfriend?" Nightwing suggested, trying to shift the mood. He was thinking of Poison Ivy, knowing she might help Harley feel better after such a blow to her pride.
"Maybe," Harley sniffled, her gaze distant. "She's on the other side of town..." She trailed off, realizing with a jolt that Joker had been her only ride. The thought seemed to send her spiraling back into tears.
Nightwing, standing tall above her, offered a small smile as he straightened. "I could give you a lift—if you're not afraid of motorbikes." His voice carried a hint of challenge, daring her.
Harley's eyes widened slightly as her tear-streaked cheeks turned red. She straightened her back, wiping her nose with the back of her hand, and threw her chin up confidently. "I'm not afraid of anything!" she declared.
Nightwing clicked a button on his keychain, and the bike roared to life. A few moments later, they were both on the motorcycle, the engine humming beneath them. Harley could feel her excitement rising, already anticipating the rush of adrenaline that would soon flood her veins, pushing away the painful thoughts from earlier.
"Hold tight," Greyson said, revving the engine. In an instant, the bike shot forward, the front wheel lifting off the ground as they sped through traffic. Harley's arms tightened around his waist, her body pressed close to his as she screamed in exhilaration. The wind hit her face like a thousand sharp needles, but the coldness only made the thrill more intense. Her hair whipped behind her, and she laughed maniacally, feeling the adrenaline course through her.
Nightwing grinned, enjoying her reaction as he skillfully maneuvered the bike through the lanes, speeding up as they headed toward Ivy's lair on the other side of town. Harley's laughter echoed in the night air, the speed and freedom giving her a sense of release, if only for a little while.
