You did see Dean again as the years went on. Usually only because your parents and John happened to be hunting the same thing, and you were too young to be left home alone with Danny. The four of you children would all play together in the rooms and halls of whatever motel your parents chose, and occasionally you'd get to swim if there was a pool. Sometimes the stretches between seeing the Winchesters were only a few months, other times, you'd go a year or two without any contact with them. Dad said that John was hell bent on killing the demon that took Mary from him, and he'd never settle down until he'd gotten his vengeance. You didn't blame John, but it made you sad that you had to spend so long without your best friend.
As the years went by, puberty began to hit him, then you, filling you both out and causing a slight shift in your feelings. You started to realize just how well built your best friend was, and (aside from the occasional squeak) his deepening voice was really cute. You were quickly developing a little crush on Dean! But there was no way he thought about you that way. The two of you had always been friends, and he probably thought of you as more of a little sister. You wrote of your feelings, drawing little hearts with your initials + D.W. in each entry of your diary. Once, Danny got a hold of your diary, and occasionally, he would bring up your crush around your parents. You swore, if your parents weren't home, you'd pummel him into the ground, but he only pulled that shit when they were around and could stop you.
Eventually, Dean got his own cell phone, and the two of you would text whenever you got time. Often your conversations would go into the wee hours of the morning, or until your parents busted you and took your phone away. Sometimes you'd feel brave and send a winky-kiss emoji in an attempt to flirt, and he'd send one back with his next message. The hard part was, you never knew if he was flirting back, or if he was just matching your emoji. With all the talking the two of you were doing, Dean started to open up to you more about what was happening on the road with his dad. At first he didn't explicitly tell you what was going on, he'd just say that they'd had a rough day with dad, but one day he finally told you his dad had hit him.
The thought of Dean clutching his face while John towered over him made you so angry that tears came to your eyes. You asked him why he didn't stand up to John, he was getting older, stronger, and he shouldn't let him do that. Dean responded:
I wish I was strong enough to stand up to him...I'm not...I wish I could just run away and come stay with you, but I can't leave Sammy...I miss you.
Why was he so hard to read?! You groaned frustratedly, but responded gently.
I miss you too. You should convince him to come on a hunt this way and drop you and Sammy off here. Then we can hangout ;)
He sent you a two word reply:
On it.
It took about a month for him to find a hunt close to our house, and then a few days of convincing to get his dad to agree to go on it and leave the boys with us. Your parents were only part-time hunters now because they had wanted you and Danny to have a normal high school experience, so they agreed to stay home and supervise the four of you while John had "all the fun.". Insert eye roll here.
