Chapter ten: How’s that for you, Chase?
Shocked at his words, I was stock still as they began to settle into the crevices of my mind. He must be joking of course because there is no way he will be hearing any musical notes float out of this mouth. It’s already bad enough that I let him in here, but to let him in on something so personal and precious to me? He must be out of his mind! Every day I endure excruciating humiliation from him and his buddy Jake when I'm myself, but the second that I'm not attired in a familiar way, I'm suddenly approachable as a human.
That itself is a revolting approach to a person but I can’t let my anger show. But if he wants to hear me sing, I’ll sing. No problem; I’ll just sing something that’ll relate to him and make him feel guilty. He never said it had to be a joyous song; he just wants to hear me sing.
Chase Daniels, be prepared.

After gradually agreeing to sing for him, I found myself in my driveway with my head resting on the wheel as my hair fanned out around me. I know that there’s nothing in singing for someone, but to me, it’s everything. It’s my secret haven that helps me get through tough times when I don’t feel like pushing further and just ending my journey where it is. Call me crazy, but it’s hell of a lot to me.
Now that I have decided what I'm going to do, I pushed any thoughts that had any association of singing for Chase to the back of my mind. Finding the strength to lift my head up, I pulled my keys out of my ignition and my grayish-blue eyes were met with the warm brown ones of Benjamin. I managed a little smile and unlocked the doors, grabbing my bag in the process as I stepped out of the drivers’ seat.
My favourite thing about Benjamin that sets him apart from the other butlers’ as my favourite is that he doesn’t ask questions when he knows I'm in an uneasy mood. He lets me be, if he has a feeling that I’ll be alright in the end. But nine chances out of ten when I'm a complete mess, he’s the one I turn to –or rather he seeks me out. He’s like the brotherly figure I lack nowadays, since my own brother is off at university.
Getting back to the topic at hand, I palmed the keys of my car as he sent a little nod, as in a way of asking if I was alright. I gave a wary smile to assure him I was ok and turned on my heel to make my way towards the door while shrugging my bag strap higher on my shoulder. After slipping my keys into the lock and turning them, I opened the door wider to let myself in as I looked around to see if there was any form of life close by.
I saw the usual maids running around with feather dusters, swatting at dust particles that my eyes failed to see at a distance. I took in their laid back attire and smiled, thinking to myself how my dad could never live up to the stereotypical rich people of society. All the maids and butlers were allowed to wear whatever they pleased with the exception of nothing above the knee and no spaghetti straps. Why Benjamin chooses to dress with that jacket that has a long tail at the back, I do not know. But if he feels comfortable with it, I doubt my parents find a fault in it.
At the moment, Lauren passed by with a WetJet mop–looking ready to do some intense mopping of the lower floor. Passing by her on my way to the kitchen, she shot me a quick smile to which I returned. Dropping my bags onto the floor, I rummaged in the freezer for a quick meal I could heat up in a matter of minutes. Having found a fettuccine alfredo at the back, I cracked a corner and stuck it. Closing the microwave door, I punched in the required time before turning my attention to the note on the fridge. Placing my hand onto the adjacent counter in casualty, I read the note as followed.
Hey there sweetie, your dad and I have some things to attend to and should be back after dinner. If you can’t find anything worthwhile to eat in the fridge, you can scope out one of the cooks and I'm sure they’d be glad to whip you up something of your liking. Remember that your piano lessons start at 8:30. Love you xxx
